Map and Directions

Join Irene Fountas and the Lesley University faculty to learn how to use The Fountas & Pinnell Literacy Continuum, to plan for, guide, and reflect on teaching decisions in guided reading, independent reading, reading mini-lessons, and interactive read aloud, as well as phonics, spelling, and word study. Writing mini-lessons and independent writing will also be addressed. Come with colleagues for an introduction to the expanded Literacy Continuum, and to think about and learn how to establish common goals and build common language to implement core instructional practices that lead each student’s literacy development forward in the elementary grades.

Topics will include:
  • Understanding proficient reading and writing.
  • Using the continuum to plan for and reflect on teaching and learning.
  • Analyzing text and prompting for deep thinking through interactive read aloud.
  • Teaching for specific reading and writing behaviors using real books and talk in whole class, small group, and individual contexts.
  • Expanding teaching expertise and language to create effective lessons that accelerate student literacy learning.
  • Creating long-range curriculum plans for literacy teaching.
    Registration Costs:
    • Noncredit - $795 (includes required texts, The Fountas and Pinnell Literacy Continuum, Prompting Guides Part 1 and Part 2).
    • Graduate credit - ($975/credit + $100 required texts fee + $40 registration fee
