HCPO 2018 * September 26 - 28, 2018, Hawaii Island

Aloha and welcome!

Join us for the 2017 Hawaii Congress of Planning Officials (HCPO) Conference, "Neighbors in Paradise", on September 20 - 22, 2017, at the 'Alohilani Resort Waikīkī (formerly the Pacific Beach Hotel). The event is a collaboration between the City and County of Honolulu, APA Hawai‘i Chapter, and other public and private partners.

As the most isolated metropolis in the world, Honolulu depends on its neighbors, including Kaua‘i, Moloka‘i, Maui, Lana‘i, and Hawai‘i Island, for social, economic, and cultural support. Our state’s isolation also creates a unique set of planning challenges that increase the importance of partnerships among public, private, non-profit, and community stakeholders. The 2017 HCPO Conference will be attended by planning professionals from around the state who will help us celebrate successful partnerships and explore ways to strengthen collaboration on our most challenging issues.

The conference will open on Wednesday with a selection of mobile workshops unique to O‘ahu, followed by a Welcome Reception at the Waikīkī Aquarium. The formal conference program will feature two keynote speakers and a host of other engaging and thought-provoking sessions all day Thursday and Friday morning.

The  opening keynote address by Rick Egged, Executive Director of the Waikīkī Improvement Association, will welcome us to Waikīkī and provide an overview of recent activities of this successful organization in tackling beach erosion, aging tourism facilities, traffic management, and more. The featured keynote speaker, C. Adam Foster, Esq., will join us from Denver, Colorado to highlight the planning and land use issues we can expect with the growth of the medical marijuana industry in Hawai‘i. Mr. Foster is a Senior Attorney with Hoban Law Group  and one of the most experienced attorneys in Colorado around the issues of cannabis entrepreneurship and marijuana-related industries.
