Welcome to the 2017 Ohio TESOL Conference
40 Years of Excellence in English Language Education

Welcome, all! Ohio TESOL and the Lau Resource Center of the Ohio Department of Education are pleased to present the 2017 Ohio TESOL Conference. This year's conference theme is 40 Years of Excellence in English Language Education, a reflection of our organizational history and four decades of providing English education to international students and new neighbors, helping to accommodate and acclimate a new generation.

Ohio TESOL would not be possible without its members and supporters. Ohio TESOL is a volunteer run, non-profit organization sustained primarily by revenue from the annual conference, so we are grateful for our members’ participation in the conference. We are also appreciative of our partnership with the Lau Resource Center, who provides not only financial support, but also K-12 expertise on English learner education. by providing new learning resources. Finally, we’d like to acknowledge our exhibitors and sponsors, whose resources help to bring a more engaging conference. Don’t forget to check them out.

Through the conference, Ohio TESOL realizes its vision to provide professional representation, resources, and expertise in support of institutions and individuals dedicated to the education of English learners. We strive to improve standards of instruction and create opportunities for collegial exchange and advocacy for our learners and fellow educators.

The Ohio TESOL Board of Directors has worked diligently using your feedback to ensure a worthwhile conference experience. This year, we have two talented featured speakers, Dr. Keith Folse and Dr. Brenda Custodio with co-author Judith O’Loughlin.

Dr. Keith Folse, Associate Professor of TESOL at the University of Central Florida, will present two sessions on Friday. Dr. Folse has written 57 textbooks on such topics as grammar, vocabulary, English for academic purposes, reading practice and much more. In Friday morning’s plenary session, Three Lingering Vocabulary Myths: Never Again, Dr. Folse will present on the importance of vocabulary for academic success. In his address, a seasoned language teacher and experienced foreign language student will lead us through a discussion of three myths that permeate the teaching of ESL vocabulary. The hope is that after hearing today's information, you will never teach vocabulary the same way again. In the breakout session on Friday, Dr. Folse will introduce a few techniques for dealing with "hot seat questions." He will also be discussing answers to seven of the most common questions ESL students ask.

Dr. Brenda Custodio, author of the newly published book Students with Interrupted Formal Education, will present our featured session on Saturday morning. Dr. Custodio will be joined by co-author Judith O’Loughlin to present ways of supporting students with interrupted formal education. Students with interrupted formal education (SIFE) constitute up to 20% of our new arrivals in grades PreK-12, and more in our adult ESL programs. This session will answer these questions: Who are these students with interrupted formal education, where do they come from, what are the causes of their interrupted education, and most importantly, what can educators do to help these students make up for lost time?

This year’s conference will be a valuable and motivating learning experience. The conference is possible through the hard work and effort of volunteers who have spent countless hours working on a variety of tasks. We are thankful for the Board of Directors, member volunteers from around the state, and the Lau Resource Center staff, for their time and effort in planning this conference. Whether by serving on our board or by becoming more involved with your interest section, we invite all members to participate actively. We also thank Betty Garrett Hospitality, the staff at the Hilton Downtown Columbus and the Greater Columbus Convention Center for their assistance with this year's conference. Finally, we thank you for your continuous drive to engage in professional development and dedication to continuously improve our profession.

Thank you and enjoy the 2017 Ohio TESOL Conference!
