Course Description 

The Training Institute on Strangulation Prevention is excited to offer a 4-day Advanced Strangulation Course in San Diego, CA from February 6-9, 2018.


Those who wish to attend must apply no later than December 8, 2017. Submitting an application does not guarantee you a spot at the training. We will respond to the first wave of accepted attendees by December 22, 2017. If you do not hear back your application will automatically be added to our waiting list. Approved attendees must confirm attendance by January 5, 2018. After this date, any unconfirmed seats will be made available to attendees on the waiting list. We will respond to those wait listed as soon as possible after January 5th.

The Institute welcomes both individuals and multi-disciplinary teams to attend, however, preference will be given to professionals attending as part of a multi-disciplinary team

Strangulation has been identified as one of the most lethal forms of domestic violence and sexual assault.This course has been specifically created for professionals seeking to improve the investigation and prosecution of strangulation cases in their communities. The course will equip attendees with strategies to properly assess for non-fatal strangulation, advocate for the specific medical and safety needs of strangulation survivors, and testify as effective expert witnesses. This course is designed for communities seeking to implement new protocols, create system-wide changes, launch a strangulation response team, or learn about best practices.

This course consists of 4 Days of training. To receive full credit for the course, attendees must attend all 4 days, complete mandatory assignments, and sign-in daily.

Our Faculty Includes National Experts in the Field:
Casey Gwinn, JD; Gael Strack, JD; Lt. Daniel Rincon; Ralph Riviello, MD; Michael Burke; Jerry Fineman, JD; Jim Henderson, MSW; and Joe Berner, SDPD, Supervising Crime Scene Specialist

The course will cover an in-depth examination of:
  • The most current research on domestic violence and sexual assault strangulation crimes
  • Medical signs and symptoms of strangulation assaults
  • Long term consequences, delayed death, and fatal strangulation
  • Investigative strategies, report writing, and interviewing witnesses
  • Clinical documentation of strangulation signs and symptoms
  • Strategies for advocacy and working with traumatized victims
  • Development of local experts
  • Use of experts in court, including tips for testifying
Attendees with have the opportunity to:
  • View a crime scene and work in a multi-disciplinary team to investigate a strangulation case and prepare evidence for a mock trial
  • Apply trauma-informed investigation and advocacy techniques
  • Practice testifying as an expert witness and practice cross-examining an expert witness
  • Submit a pending strangulation case for review by faculty and experts
  • Develop strategies for implementing best practices in local communities
  • Practice giving a 5-minute presentation on strangulation

Attendees will also be provided with comprehensive course materials and handouts not offered in any other setting.

Continuing Education Credits

MCLE Credits (for California): Approximately 25 Continuing Legal Education (MCLE) credits are offered with this training, included in the price of registration. Alliance for HOPE International is a California approved provider of MCLE credits for attorneys (Provider #15493). Professionals in states outside of California should check with their own state bar to determine whether these credits are approved in their jurisdiction.

CE Credits: Alliance for HOPE International is partnered with the Relationship Training Institute (RTI) to offer 25 Continuing Education (CE) credits with this training for the price of $25. RTI is approved by the American Psychological Association to sponsor continuing education for psychologists. RTI maintains responsibility for this program and its content. RTI has been approved by NBCC as an Approved Continuing Education Provider, ACEP#6181. Programs that do not qualify for NBCC credit are clearly identified. RTI is solely responsible for all aspects of the program. All Workshop Professional CE Hours are approved by:

BRN Credits (Pending): Alliance for HOPE International is pending approval by the California Board of Registered Nursing (BRN) for 25 Contact Hours included in the price of registration.
