UC Berkeley's Project Production Systems Laboratory (P2SL), the Lean Construction Institute (LCI), and the American Institute of Architects (AIA) are delighted to again co-host the Lean Design Forum. The Forum meets twice a year (in Berkeley early in the year and in the Midwest mid-year).

As in previous years, we are working with AIA so you may get continuing education credit for participating in this event.

This 1.5-day meeting on Thursday (7:30 am to 4:15 pm) and Friday (7:30 am to 12:00 noon), February 8-9, 2018, will be held at HS Lordships at the Berkeley Marina.

We have the following terrific speakers, confirmed to attend:
  • Gloria Flores, who will discuss her book titled "Learning to Learn: the Navigation of Moods"
  • John Gambatese, Oregon State professor who will discuss "Prevention through Design"
  • Rob Williamson who will explain the new approach to project programming his company, Taylor Design, has adopted. 
and the following Special Guest speaker is confirmed to speak and will lead discussion all Thursday afternoon (2 sessions):
  • Don Reinertsen who will speak about the dimensions of product development that rhyme with construction

8:10 - 9:45 Session I: Rob Williamson will chair a panel discussing how his company, Taylor Design, has changed the way they do architectural programming.
9:45 - 10:15 Break
10:15 - 12:00 Session II: Jenny Hastings and Romano NIckerson will chair a panel discussing how her company, Boulder Associates, is using evidence based design. 
12:00 - 12:45 Lunch
12:45 - 2:30 Session III: Don Reinertsen will speak on what we in the design-and-construction industry can learn from product development. A teaser from his most recent book: "Few developers realize that queues are the single most important cause of poor product development performance."
2:30-3:00 Break
3:00 - 3:45 Session IV: Don Reinertsen will share further lessons. Another teaser from his book: "We cannot eliminate all variability without eliminating all value-added." 
3:45  - 4:00 Plus/Delta
4:00 Adjourn 
7:30 - 8:00 Plated Breakfast: (please arrive by 7:30)
8:00 – 9:45 Session V:  Gloria Flores will explain why 'navigating moods' is the key that opens the door to learning, both for individuals and teams. 
9:45 – 10:15 Break
10:15 – Noon Session VI: John Gambatese will explain how to design buildings for safety in their construction and throughout their life cycles.
12:00 – 12: 15 Plus/Delta

Fees include continental breakfast and lunch on Thursday, plated breakfast on Friday, and breaks each day.

This meeting will take place Hs Lordships Restaurant (www.hslordships.com) at the Berkeley marina. 

Public Transit: Take BART to the Berkeley (Downtown Berkeley, not North Berkeley) station. Then at Center and Shattuck Avenue, catch the Bus 51B bus towards the Berkeley Marina. Get off at the Berkeley Pier at Seawall Drive, then walk south ~2 mins.

By Car: There is plenty of free parking space, but please do NO LEAVE VALUABLES in your car! Take 80/580 to Berkeley and exit on University Avenue. Head west towards the Bay. At the stop sign, stay on the left-hand side of the road and continue towards the Berkeley pier. When you reach the bay, turn left and head south until you see the restaurant.
