Course Description:

This one-day course co-hosted by USC’s Division of Biokinesiology and Physical Therapy and the by the International Association for Dance Medicine and Science will discuss prevention and treatment of injuries common to dancers using a literature-informed approach. The course will include brief clinical and scientific presentations; a Keynote lecture from an established dance physical therapist, Marijeanne Liederbach of the Harkness Center for Dance Injuries; hands-on workshops for physical therapists and dance teachers; and research laboratory demonstrations and experiences.



Course Objectives:

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Discuss the performance demands of dancers as athletes and artists in terms of biomechanical, physiological, and psychosocial demands.
  • Analyze the mechanopathology contributing to common pathologies seen in dancers and employ prevention techniques to alter this mechanopathology.
  • Improve their clinical evaluation and treatment techniques for these common pathologies.
  • Experience laboratory tools and techniques used to acquire evidence for evidence-based practice for dancers.
  • Connect and network with local dance medicine practitioners in Southern California and surrounding regions.

The International Association for Dance Medicine & Science (IADMS) is approved by the Board of Certification, Inc. to offer continuing education for Certified Athletic Trainers.

IADMS (BOC AP#: P3457) is approved by the Board of Certification, Inc. to provide continuing education to Certified Athletic Trainers. This program is eligible for a maximum of 10 Category A hours/CEU's.
