Cities often face challenges in finding a balance between the desired densities and the required parking when taking up redevelopment projects.  In order to achieve the preferred high density in urban markets it is quintessential to come up with unique site designs and innovative parking strategies. In this session, we will discuss how to assess parking requirements for redevelopment and transit-oriented developments and the availability of parking in such area.

Additionally, we will discuss how shared parking and reduced parking requirements unravels the potential for high density developments around public transit and acts as a control mechanism against urban sprawl.  Shared parking is a land use/development strategy that optimizes parking capacity by allowing complementary land uses with different peak times to share spaces, rather than producing separate spaces for separate uses.

The key learning objectives are:

  • Assess parking requirements needs for urban and transit-oriented development projects;
  • Explore site designs and parking strategies for optimal parking;
  • Examine shared parking strategies and the usage of existing parking to meet new demand;
  • Help facilitate municipalities and developers dialogue around creating shared parking; and
  • Discuss best practices and parking trends embraced to balance the need for redevelopment, parking and desired density.
