                               FORUM 2018 Preliminary Program

The National Alliance of Preservation Commissions is proud to present the 11th biennial NAPC FORUM in Des Moines, Iowa from July 18 to 22, 2018. NAPC FORUM is the only national conference focused on the issues facing local historic preservation commissions and historic districts. FORUM 2016 in Mobile hosted nearly 600 registrants from 44 states. FORUM 2018 will build on this landmark success with dozens of educational sessions and discussion panels, mobile workshops and tours, and five days of non-stop networking for staff and volunteers representing local, state and national organizations and government agencies.

Educational sessions at FORUM 2018 will generally focus on one of the following themes:
  • Main Street and Rural Resources
  • Advocacy and Community Engagement
  • Diverse and Underrepresented Resources
  • Community Resilience and Sustainability
  • Methods and Materials
  • Commission Potpourri
A flyover city no more, Des Moines, with its vibrant and thriving downtown, has become one of the fastest growing and yes, one of the hippest cities in the Midwest. The City of Des Moines is the destination for the National Alliance of Preservation Commissions’ FORUM 2018. With three local historic districts, twenty-two local landmarks and a bustling downtown, the renaissance of Des Moines is due in large part to the impact of historic preservation. Through strong partnerships, community support and the use of historic tax credits, downtown Des Moines has transformed from an area that emptied out at the end of the workday to one where approximately 80,000 Iowans work and live. For hundreds of thousands of other Iowans, downtown is a place to enjoy historic architecture, ride the bike trails, attend a concert or visit the downtown Farmers Market. The city has effectively used historic preservation and cultural amenities to make downtown a distinctive and desirable place to be.

Along with the City of Des Moines, the Iowa State Historic Preservation Office is a lead partner for FORUM 2018. Housed in the Department of Cultural Affairs, the Iowa State Historic Preservation Office works to conserve, preserve and celebrate the rich natural and cultural resources of Iowa. Beyond the important preservation work in Des Moines, Iowa has one of the largest Certified Local Government (CLG) program in the nation with more than 90 cities and counties participating in the program. The strengths of this program include its robust preservation network, an emphasis on commissioner education, and the promotion of peer role models.
