Though she didn't begin writing books until the age of thirty-five, Patricia is now one of the most beloved authors of both picture books and novels. She is often praised for the simplicity and sensitivity she brings to her stories and for her deft handling of unconventional subject matter.

8:40 pm - 9:30 pm Icebreaker Pitch Party Event (Ballroom)

The conference offers various times to mix and mingle with faculty and fellow writers and illustrators. It’s quite possible that someone might ask you what you’re working on. Wouldn’t it be nice if you knew what to say?

Come join us for some fun Friday festivities! Bring your pitch on an index card or memorize it if you prefer. It doesn’t have to be perfect–we will help you practice and polish your pitch in an easy and entertaining way. By the end, your pitch will be glistening and you’ll leave glowing and glad you came!

Maybe this will help you get started:

Fill in the blanks:

After _______________, {main character}

must ______________or risk ______________ in order to _________________.

OR

Think about it this way:

After {inciting incident}, {main character} must {primary action},

or risk {struggle internal or external} in order to {end goal/big want or why/resolution}.

Get your pitch powers activated!

(3rd Floor Breakout rooms will also be made available after the demo)

Are you interested in starting a critique group? Or are you currently in one, but want to get more out of your group? This is the perfect event for all levels. While this event is an extension of Harold's afternoon workshop on critique groups (K4), completion of the day workshop is not mandatory to be able to attend this event. From expert critique group member to someone considering joining/sharing a group, this is the event to attend.

There will be a presentation on group rules and expectations for both in-person and online groups. Critique groups with a mix of experience levels will be set up, based on genre. Using Harold's critique group set-up and focus questions, each group will be set on their way. Support and guidance will only be a few steps away, as Harold, Rajani, Sally and Cindy circulate to offer tips, tricks and plain old wisdom.

8:00 pm - 9:15 pm Open Mic/Whose Rhyme is it, Anyway? with Matt Forrest Esenwine (Mahogany)

Come show off your stuff! Share what you’ve been working on: children’s poetry, picture book manuscript, maybe a song or a few sample pages of a book…all genres of children’s lit (from PBs to YA) are welcome. Did you know that some material shared in the past has eventually been published?? So let’s hear it! We’ll again be adding a special feature during Open Mic, called “Whose Rhyme is it, Anyway?”- an improvisational flash-poetry game! Two writers (or teams) will be given random words and subjects and will need to create a children’s poem within the allotted time. With audience participation, this challenge should be fun for all…we hope you’ll join us, whether you write or not!

9:00 pm - 10:15 pm   Headshot Photo Opportunity with Carter Hasegawa (Editor, Candlewick Press) (2nd floor Foyer)

The path to success involves preparation. In order to be ready for professional events or a new book jacket, an updated photograph can be invaluable. 9:00 pm - 10:15 pm   Agent/Editor/Art Director Meet & Greet, and Portfolio Showcase   (Mahogany)

We encourage everyone to stop by and meet our critique faculty at the Portfolio Showcase Meet and Greet before heading over to other evening activities.

Join our critique faculty at the bar for a healthy dose of schmooze. It's all about the networking, so come prepared to chat with other writers and illustrators. Don't forget to practice your pitch, someone just might ask you what your book is about!

The Portfolio Showcase is a fantastic opportunity for the illustrators who attend the Conference to have a showcase of their work for members of the publishing community.
