Russian Orthodox Church in
Great Britain and Ireland

June 8th - 10th, 2018

“Martyrdom and Mission”

The Sourozh Diocesan Conference is an annual gathering of clergy and laity from Britain and Ireland, together with guests from abroad. The tradition of holding this type of gathering was established in the 1970’s by the ever-memorable Metropolitan Anthony (Bloom). Distinguished speakers from Russia, Britain and other countries are invited to the conference.

This year is the centenary of the martyrdom of the Royal Passion-Bearers, the Tsar Nicholas II and his family, who were among the first of the host of New Martyrs and Confessors to suffer for Christ, and the beginning of the era of unprecedented persecution of the Russian Orthodox Church.
The past century in Russia was filled with human suffering, ensuing wars, political and socio-economic experiments and the 100 year anniversary of the tragedy is an occasion calling today’s society to analyse and evaluate the catastrophe that occurred.

This pattern of sacrificial martyrdom, witnessing to the Christian faith at the cost of one’s own life, is one that has been repeated from the first days of the Church until our own time. The forthcoming conference will study the relationship between martyrdom and Christian mission in a series of talks, seminars and group discussions. There will be a programme for children related to the theme of the conference. His Grace, Bishop Matthew of Sourozh, will preside at the concelebrated services on Saturday and Sunday.

The Conference will conclude with an optional pilgrimage to St Alban's Abbey for a moleben and veneration of the relic of the Protomartyr of Britain.

Speakers incude:

Archpriest Mikhail Dudko, Archpriest Kirill Kaleda, Archpriest Andrew Louth, Archpriest Paul Elliott, Alexei Beglov

Talks will be given in English or Russian, with translation. The draft conference timetable is available on the Programme & Timetable page of this site.
