About this Workshop:
  This workshop is based on the National Task Group on Intellectual Disabilities and Dementia Practices (NTG) highly rated national model training curriculum on dementia capable care of adults with I/DD.  The workshop will be lead by Kathryn Pears, MPPM.  Ms. Pears is co-chair of the NTG's training and education committee that developed the model curriculum and is co-lead trainer for the NTG workshops.  Formerly from Maine, Ms. Pears now lives in South Carolina and travels the country conducting workshops on I/DD and dementia on behalf of the NTG.  

Target Audience:  The workshop is appropriate for all staff in the field of intellectual/developmental disability or aging including DSPs, program managers, adult day services, case managers, behavior analysts, psychologists, nurses, social workers and any staff with direct or ancillary responsibility for caring for aging adults with I/DD.

This workshop covers the best evidence-informed practices in care for adults with DD and dementia. 

Topics include:
  • Aging, dementia, and DD:  a growing challenge for care providers.
  • Down syndrome and Alzheimer's disease.
  • Recognizing the onset of dementia in adults with DD…challenges & resources.
  • Established protocols for obtaining a differential diagnosis.
  • Understanding and managing behavioral and psychiatric symptoms of dementia in adults with DD
  • The 4 triggers of behavioral disturbances in dementia.
  • Non-pharmacologic interventions and the use of medications for managing behaviors.
  • Dementia-friendly design for group homes: easy and inexpensive adaptations to support independence.
  • End-of-life care and ethical considerations.
All participants will receive a certificate for 8 contact hours.
