The Africa Grantmakers’ Affinity Group (AGAG) works to build an inclusive and diverse network of new and experienced grantmakers and provide a forum where funders can explore the intersectionality of their work in a regional context. We believe an informed, knowledgeable, and connected network of practitioners is better equipped to make an impact.

Since 2000, the Annual Conference has provided a unique benefit to the social sector as one of the few regular meetings with an international reach designed specifically for funders who support initiatives targeting Africa.

Each year colleagues based inside and outside of Africa attend the Conference where they build professional relationships with peers who face similar challenges and reinforce their personal commitment to building a robust, effective, and responsive philanthropy sector.

Why Attend the Annual Conference?
  • It is a unique opportunity for sharing, learning, and listening.
  • It examines multi-dimensional and interrelated problems from different perspectives.
  • It provides an opportunity to reflect upon how your funding fits within the broader landscape of philanthropy targeting Africa.
  • It exposes you to a diverse community of funders you might not encounter elsewhere.
Last year's Annual Conference was the first in a three part series connected by the theme, “Disrupting Silos, Connecting Conversations, Creating Impact." This series is a call to action to:
  • connect the conversations between funders inside and outside of Africa
  • disrupt sector specific approaches and silo perspectives
  • build relationships that create more impact
This year’s conference, "Part II: Exploring the Why” will take a deeper dive into the questions that emerged from last year. We will examine the why of grantmaking approaches through exploring the assumptions that shape our strategies and expectations. We will also share the results from the Survey of Africa Funders launched in November and engage participants in identifying issues for further exploration.

Topics to be discussed will include:
  • How Philanthropy Shapes the Narrative About Africa
  • Disrupting Barriers for the the Next Generation of Change Agents
  • Block Chain Technology and Philanthropy: What’s on the Horizon?
  • The Growth of Donor Advised Funds
  • Results from the 2018 Survey of Africa Funders
The interactive format will include:
  • Plenary sessions that explore cross-cutting topics relevant to all funders interested in Africa.
  • Campfire sessions that engage participants in small group discussions.
  • Lunch Table Discussions that provide an informal space to discuss hot topics and new initiatives.
  • Networking breakfasts and breaks where participants can continue their conversations.
  • Opening Reception at the end of the first day hosted by the Ford Foundation #AfricaNoFilter Initiative  .
