Summary

This series of online seminars will be taught via the internet. Students will need a high-speed internet connection (DSL, Cable, T1, etc.), a computer with internet browser (Internet Browser is required to view the Webinar), and a reliable telephone line.  We will teach the webinar using Cisco WebEx (www.webex.com). We encourage students to attend a Free Live Demo at the WebEx Website (between 7:30am and 4:30pm PST) to get a feel for the software and workflow before attending our webinars.

Nature Photography and High Dynamic Range processing go hand-in-hand. Using a wide angle lens to capture landscape images often produces photographs that exceed the dynamic range of today’s digital cameras. Although the proper use of ND grad filters will greatly reduce the dynamic range, it is often necessary to combine two or more bracketed images in order to accurately capture natural scenes.

Our Intelligent HDR (iHDR) processing workflow uses masks and layers in Adobe Photoshop to selectively combine 2 or more images. The resulting natural looking HDR image preserves the “depth” in shadows and details in the highlights. Automated products that combine multiple bracketed shots often produce flat-looking images, because the HDR is applied indiscriminately. Intelligent HDR allows the photographer to precisely control where the blending is applied - without requiring mind-numbing pixel-by-pixel adjustments.

The goal of this online seminar is to teach techniques for creating natural-looking high dynamic range images. We will provide notes, videos, and a selection of images for student practice (via FTP download). Instructors will be teaching with Adobe Photoshop CS4. Most concepts will also be applicable to Photoshop CS, CS2, and CS3.
