The Body of Christ has AIDS:
If one of us is infected,
all of us are affected.

What is SECCAM

SECCAM is the only organization at the national level offering support and networking opportunities for Catholic ministers involved in the spiritual and emotional care of our brothers and sisters impacted by AIDS, with the goal of strengthening the pastoral response to the reemerging AIDS crisis in the United States.

SECCAM needs your prayers, your voice, your experience, your support and your efforts. Join us to further develop initiatives that will raise awareness about the need  for a steadfast, Christ-like response to our brothers and sisters impacted by AIDS!

Why a Catholic AIDS Assembly

In the United States, over 1 million people have been diagnosed with AIDS, and it is estimated that there are over 50,000 new HIV infections and more than 14,000 deaths due to AIDS-related complications every year.

In these times, the economic recession affecting the country threatens to aggravate the national AIDS crisis, as poverty, homelessness, lack of access to health care, incarceration rates, drug use, and higher rates of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) can all increase rates of HIV.

The reality of the reemergence of AIDS in the United States has caused us to look anew through the lens of compassion as the Gospel calls us. SECCAM’s slogan, God Entrusts Us To One Another, is a timely clarion call which inspires us to gather in prayer and in dialogue, to learn, to effectively organize and collaborate, and ultimately to bring change and promote healing to all affected by AIDS.

The SECCAM Assembly is designed for Catholic AIDS ministers, lay ecclesial ministers, clergy, religious, teachers, and anyone interested in furthering a compassionate response to AIDS in the United States. If you are already ministering to those impacted by HIV/AIDS; if you are interested in learning about AIDS Ministry and promoting it in your community or diocese; or if you’re a person living with, or affected by HIV/AIDS, then SECCAM ’10 is for you.

What you can expect at the SECCAM Assembly

The Assembly will feature presentations by AIDS ministers, health professionals, and other important figures in the HIV/AIDS field. Topics discussed include, among other:
  • Our faith in action -- The pastoral response to AIDS
  • Updates on AIDS in the U.S.
  • The challenges to AIDS Ministry
  • Addressing cultural diversity in AIDS awareness and prevention education
  • Young people and AIDS
  • The AIDS crisis among the elderly
  • How the crisis affects ethnic communities in the U.S.
  • Medical update
  • AIDS-related stigma and discrimination
In addition, participants will receive spiritual support and networking opportunities to establish creative collaborations to address the challenges of AIDS.

There will also be a special Memorial Service in honor of our brothers and sisters who have gone before us and are now in the presence of the Lord.

When And Where SECCAM ’10 Will Take Place

SECCAM ’10 will begin on Tuesday, July 27 at 8:30 a.m., ending with dinner on Thursday, July 29 (around 5:45 p.m.), at the facilities of St. Brendan High School, in Miami.

The fee for SECCAM ’10 is $180 per person and includes: materials; morning transportation from hotel to St. Brendan; afternoon transportation back to hotel; mid-morning and mid-afternoon coffee breaks; lunch and dinner. Registration for one or two days only: $65 per person, per day. All paying participants will also receive one (1) SECCAM '10 T-shirt.

The SECCAM Assembly is a great educational and networking opportunity made possible thanks to volunteer efforts. All fees collected from registration are used to pay for materials, rentals and meals for participants. Cost for travel, registration and lodging are covered by the participants—many of them presenters during the Assembly—or the organizations they represent.

We’ll gather to share and receive,
to encourage and be supported,
to pray and reflect,
to remember and work together
for our brothers and sisters
by furthering a Christ-like response
to AIDS in the United States.
