Bhakti Yoga India Tour and Kirtan Camp
Sunday, March 06, 2011 - Tuesday, March 15, 2011

Rangeeli Mahal Ashram
Barsana, Uttar Pradesh
India

A 10-day journey into the heart...

The Braj district of Uttar Pradesh state is one of the most revered pilgrimage places in India. It is the land of divine love. The presence of God permeates the atmosphere here and is especially felt in shrines, temples and monuments, as well as natural locations such as rivers, forests, ponds and groves that celebrate the divine.

From the rural village of Barsana, the heart of this district, we will explore this sacred land through field trips, learn more about the path of bhakti, and enhance our inner devotional journey through kirtan, meditation and yoga in an authentic ashram.

Kirtan Camp - rejoice through voice

In the meditative surroundings of the ashram, we will be introduced to the Indian music system and will learn how to develop and train our voices, and to play the harmonium and  Indian drum (dholak).

The Kirtan Camp will give you the skill and confidence to lead kirtan in a group or to simply add kirtan to your own spiritual practice as a meditation. This is an in-depth, foundational program. Your curriculum will include:
  • an introduction to the Indian music system
  • how to read musical notation and play the harmonium
  • the basics of kirtan rhythm and beat
  • correct pronunciation of names and mantras in the kirtans
  • how to strengthen and train your voice and sing from the heart
  • the kirtans of Jagadguru Shri Kripalu Ji Maharaj (Shri Maharaj Ji)
Shri Maharaj Ji is one of the greatest living bhakti Saints of this age. For more about his life story, click here. We will learn about the significance of Braj through his teachings, and our kirtan study will be based on just a few of the thousands of devotional kirtans that Shri Maharaj Ji has written over the last 60 years.

Shri Maharaj Ji's teachings and kirtans have inspired the hearts of thousands. They have been popularised by recording artists such as Anup Jalota, Anuradha Poudwal and others, and they are of such great importance that they have even been the topic of several PhD theses! We will explore these writings from a philosophical point of view and we will also learn how to play and sing them.

An optional 4-day tour extension is available for participants to meet Shri Maharaj and participate in his satsang program at the conclusion of the kirtan camp.

Our daily philosophy, meditation sessions and field trips will be guided by Nikhileshwari Devi (Didi Ji) who has over 20 years experience traveling, living in and leading groups in Northern India.  Born in Germany and raised and educated in the heartland of the United States, in 1991 she became one of the first western women to receive ordination (sanyas) in the raganuga tradition of Hinduism. She has been a practitioner of Hinduism for the last 35 years and a teacher for the last 20 years.

Didi Ji's teaching and leadership style is characterized by personal warmth, humor and a sense of adventure. She brings a  natural enthusiasm, grace and inspiration to our inner devotional journey and also our outer explorations on the tour.
