Nairobi, Kenya

This summer the Africa Yoga Project is offering a 12-day service trip to Kenya. This is your opportunity to come and experience Kenya and the energy of the AYP community in a meaningful way.

This service trip will give you the opportunity to not only witness AYP’s work first hand but to really get to know the teachers and community as you work together to complete a community service project. You and your teammates will get your hands dirty and take on the personal challenge of stepping outside your comfort zone in a new culture.  This cross-cultural exchange will provide opportunities for meaningful interactions and the potential to make lasting connections. You will also be able to share your individual skills and talents to contribute to the service projects.

Embarking on this adventure will challenge your assumptions and expand your perspective. This journey is unique to the Africa Yoga Project in that it allows you to connect with the yoga community in Africa, to share the experience with a team of like-minded yogis, and to combine elements of “seva” (the yogic concept of selfless service) and “safari” (the Swahili word for adventure). One of the benefits of this trip will be sharing the experience with a group. As an active participant in the group you will be able to learn from each other, support one another, and reflect on the challenges and rewards of this experience.

A typical day will begin with a group yoga practice. Then it is off to the work site where you will spend most of the day working side by side with the local community on a tangible service project in the slums of Nairobi. On breaks you will get to share thoughts and stories over local foods like chai and ugali. In the evenings we will return to the group’s residence to share dinner with the team and participate in facilitated activities. You will also have the opportunity to visit AYP teacher’s in action – teaching their community yoga classes – and participate in AYP’s very popular, weekly Saturday practice that brings together the teachers and students from throughout Nairobi for a very “Kenyan” yoga experience.

In addition to the intensive service in Nairobi, you will also enjoy feeding giraffes, seeing baby elephants, and visiting the colorful markets in Nairobi. The group will also travel to Amboseli national park where you will spend two days immersed in local Masai culture and visiting with two AYP Masai yoga teachers. You will have the unique opportunity to spend the night with a local family in one of the AYP teacher's villages and get to experience what life is like in a Masai community. Our time in Amboseli will also include catching glimpses of Mt. Kilimanjaro, and seeing elephants and other majestic wildlife on safari game drives.

As a participant on the Seva Safari and a volunteer with the Africa Yoga Project, you are a representative of the global yoga community, dynamically engaging in service. Each participant commits to raising a minimum of $5,000 to cover the costs of the program, the service project expenses and to support the continued work of AYP. This challenge begins at home with your fundraising efforts, and continues on your journey to Kenya. Through your participation, you will embody all that AYP works for such as fostering non-violence, cultivating unity and creating possibility. Our aim is to instill you with the confidence to answer questions about the programs we offer, what you will be doing whilst volunteering in Kenya, and ways that people can support and contribute to your pledge.

We are very excited about this opportunity to share AYP with you and hope to see you on our “Seva Safari” in Kenya!
