JESUS AGAINST HIMSELF: From Itinerant Galilean to Christ of God and Back Again: How the fundamentals of Christian belief in Jesus are challenged by history and criticism.

I. AUGUST 30: JESUS: JEW OR GENTILE?

What the permanent Jewishness of Jesus meant during his lifetime, and how a recovered appreciation of its importance overturns subsequent Christian assumptions - both of doctrine and prejudice. The liberating consequence of
historical criticism of texts. Seeing where the foundational Christian error led, and correcting it.

II. SEPTEMBER 27: JESUS: SOLITUDE OR SOLIDARITY?
The social context of Jesus’s milieu (Roman occupation, Hellenization, Judaism in flux, etc) and his role in it. Particular attention to the place of women. The religious genius of Jesus, but also a ministry of community organizing. From God’s Oneness to the beloved community. Politics and religion.

III. OCTOBER 25: JESUS: MAGICIAN OR HEALER?
How a post-modern faith finds meaning in the centrality of healing for the story of Jesus. How did Jesus come to be regarded as divine, and what is the content of that doctrine today? Retrieving miracle, prayer, and resurrection
without betraying rational and critical belief. From first to second naiveté.

IV. NOVEMBER 15: JESUS: AN UNDISCOVERED FAITH
Acknowledging how little is known of the historical Jesus, and how the Christ of faith can be shattered by interruptions in history (like the Holocaust). Violence and Jesus’ relation to it emerges as an organizing question. How
revolutionary a historical reading of his story is for Christian understanding, but also, perhaps, for Jewish.  Anticipating a truly new theology of Jesus, even before it emerges.
