The Many Faces of Kidlit: Pathways & Journeys

Early bird rates available through August 20, 2016. The conference member early-bird price is set at $235, which includes all meals from Friday dinner through Sunday lunch.

Members: Early Bird $235, then $250 (August 21 - October 6)

Optional Friday Intensives, 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. – cost is $15 (includes lunch, choose one)

PAL Day, a series of presentations and roundtables geared for published PAL members. A limited number of spaces are available. The PAL intensive is only for those members listed as full PAL level published on their SCBWI login (magazines or books), or that they are under contract with a PAL-level publisher for a forthcoming publication in 2017 or 2018.

Write-In, in which you’ll actually get writing done! Plus, learn from your peers during breaks. A limited number of spaces are available. Open to everyone.

Friday evening

SCBWI member illustrators attending the conference are invited to exhibit one unpublished illustration created using the prompt word DISGUISE. Artwork must be displayed on a small tabletop easel or book stand, which should be provided by the artist. Each illustrator is limited to a tabletop space 18” wide. The displayed illustrations will be judged by the faculty and a winner will be chosen. 

Portfolio Display

The illustrator's portfolio and one dummy, along with postcards or business cards can also be displayed in front of the contest piece. Even if you're not participating in the contest, you can still show your portfolio. There is no extra charge, but you must register for this when you register for the conference. 

Art Work Drop Off
Please drop off your mounted illustration, your own small tabletop easel labeled with your name, your portfolio and postcards (optional) in the Crystal Room. Bring a color copy of your illustration - not the original - as we cannot guarantee the safety of your work. Saturday evening
Get busy crafting a mask inspired by your favorite book to our Masquerade Costume Ball and Social. If you're running out of time before the event, don't worry, we'll have some crafting supplies on hand for you to create yourself an intriguing disguise. Featuring music, dancing, appetizers, and a cash bar. Prizes for the best costumes.


12 – 4 pm – FREE – everyone welcome!

Stay for lunch and then join us for a presentation and panel discussion on what it’s like working with smaller presses, boutique agencies, and indie publishing. There will be an opportunity to pitch your MG or YA to Brain Mill Press following the panel discussions. There will also be a showcase and book signing opportunity for members who’ve recently had an indie or small press book published. 


This year, we’ll be offering the chance to purchase multiple/additional critiques, as we’ve received feedback from our prolific writers, many of whom work across genres/categories. Manuscript submission due by September 8th.

In-Person Critique with National Faculty
$50 for in-person, national faculty critique (limit ONE, first 70 w/correct formatting and received on time are guaranteed a national faculty critiquer)

Portfolio Review
$50 for in-person, portfolio review (limit ONE, first 10 to purchase are guaranteed an art director reviewer)

Written Critique
$35 for additional written manuscript critiques (limit 3, must also have purchased one in-person critique to be able to purchase written critiques) - note, these are only for manuscripts, not portfolios


We will have an online registration option as well as the paper mail-in option. We have a block of hotel rooms reserved at a rate of $89/night (no extra tax or fees!). Rooms in the Roger Williams Inn, the location of all conference keynotes and breakouts, include singles, doubles, triples, and some that sleep four. Please call the Green Lake Conference Center at 920-394-3323 before August 19 and mention you’re with the SCBWI Writing Retreat to receive the discounted rate and select your room type. We recommend reserving your hotel rooms early, even before you register. You can reserve your hotel room today if you want to! There are a few rooms in the adjacent lodge available with kitchenettes and fridges if necessary (upcharge).


All meals from Friday dinner through Sunday lunch are included in your registration fee.

All meals will be served from the sprawling hot buffet and salad bar, which will have multiple entree and side dish choices for each meal. There is also a dessert and ice cream bar! Vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free diets will be accommodated with options, but please note any specific requirements on your form when you register so we can pass that information along to the chef.

Attending participants may showcase ONE title in the conference book store. 

RULES: The book must have been released within the last 12 months. Self or traditionally published books are both accepted, however the book must be for children or teens, or on the craft of writing/illustrating. One title per person. If the bookstore is unable to get your book, you will be contacted with an option to bring your own copies. Book information (ISBN, Title, Release Date) is due by September 21, 2016 to JoAnn Early Macken at macken@wi.rr.com.

BLOGGING/RECORDING Audio taping, videotaping, and/or transmitting any part of this conference is prohibited. The presentations and handouts are copyrighted and may not be reprinted, blogged, tweeted, or reproduced in any way without written permission of the copyright holder. You may share your thoughts about the conference and some brief quotes, but please respect our speakers and the copyright law by not giving away detailed notes. Thank you for your professionalism.

Cancellation must be before August 20th.
  • All cancellations incur a $20 processing fee. 
  • Only registration and intensive fees may be refunded. 
  • No refunds will be granted for manuscript critiques, portfolio reviews, manuscript competition fees. 
  • Registrant must contact Andrea Skyberg or Miranda Paul at wisconsin-ra@scbwi.org to request refund.
  • Contact the Green Lake Lodge for any lodging refunds. The conference is separate and we are unable to process lodging refunds.

This year we offered online registration, which incurred a large fee for each transaction. We did not make our participants pay the fee, but if you would like to offer a donation to offset the cost of the transaction fee, we’d greatly appreciate it. If you would like to make a general donation, or one specifically designated toward one of our scholarship funds (Diversity Committee Scholarship, Paul Family Diversity Scholarship, or the Marsha Dunlap Scholarship) there is a place to do that at the end of the registration. We'll also have the book basket donation, so please bring a book to share. The book basket is given out to one lucky participant who gets the chance to gift the basket of books to a local library or school.
