Join us for our 30th Anniversary Celebration on October 24, 2015, with a dinner, silent auction and internally-recognized jazz singer Denise Thimes. For the past 30 years the AHF has funded critical research to uncover the causes and find a cure for laminitis - a crippling, devastating disease in horses' hooves.  We will celebrate how far we have come and our commitment to continue until a cure is found. In addition, the AHF has provided education for horse owners around the world to alleviate horses' suffering.

What is laminitis?

Laminitis is an inflammation in the tissue (lamina) that connects the foot bone to the hoof wall. The inflamed tissue loosens and pulls away from the hoof and causes the bone to fall forward and sink.

Laminitis is devasting for horses and their owners.

Laminitis claims the lives of thousands of horses and ponies – 150,000 in the U.S. are afflicted each year.

Laminitis doesn't discriminate.

A top-level performance horse can be as easily affected as a beloved backyard pony.  Laminitis is responsible for the premature loss of the legendary and seemingly invincible Secretariat.

Laminitis extinguishes a horse's spirit.

Dr. Donald M. Walsh, AHF founder and veterinarian, says that, “Laminitis is an extremely painful and devastating experience for the horse and unbearably sad for its owner to watch. The damage to their feet prevents them from running and moving in herds, grazing, fleeing from threats or competing. When horses lose their physical abilities, they also lose their spirits to live.”

Katy Hinkley Cassells, AHF board member and event chairperson says that, "From early childhood I recognized that the horse was something special – a gift to mankind.  The horses’ impact on society's development has been immeasurable.  I believe we owe it to the horse to find a cure for laminitis."
