Background – Pageant Founded in Kewanee Illinois:

The national Miss You Can Do It Pageant, now in its fifth year, was founded by Abbey Curran, Iowa’s 2008 Miss USA titleholder, who has been challenged by cerebral palsy since birth.

The Miss You Can Do It Pageant is a non-profit organization.  Young women from any United States location ages 5-25 with special needs and challenges can enter the national competition held each year in Kewanee, Illinois.

You Can Do It Pageant comes to Minnesota:

Minnesota’s own Alexandra Schmitt of New Brighton,

is the 2008-2009 Ms. You Can Do It national title holder.

When Alex entered the 2008 national Miss You Can Do It Pageant in Kewanee IL, she knew it did not matter if the judges gave her the crown or not – she already was “Ms. You Can Do It.” Alex’s premature birth and cerebral palsy diagnosis had already given her a long list of things she was not supposed to do, but she did them anyway:  she wasn’t suppose to live; she wasn’t suppose to breathe on her own; she wasn’t suppose to eat on her own; she wasn’t suppose to walk, let alone dance; she wasn’t suppose to do well in school, let alone go to college – to name just a few of Alex’s life accomplishments that make her “Ms. You Can Do It” – with or without the crown and the national title.

As Alex worked with her coach to prepare for the pageant she walked taller, spoke clearer and kept her balance better.  Who knew that preparing for a pageant was such good speech and physical therapy?

As a result, Alex is now a strong advocate for the You Can Do It Pageant and wants to invite all girls and young women with special needs and challenges to join in.

Alex is working to expand the You Can Do It Pageant to include statewide pageants through out the United States, starting with Minnesota.

Alex also wants to use her crown to extend her appreciation to the many individuals and organizations that helped her take each step from birth trauma to pageant queenAlex is available to help with fundraisers and for community appearances.

Alex is a 2006 graduate of Irondale High School.  She is currently attending Century College in White Bear Lake.
