Welcome to the 2010 NAVREF Annual Conference on-line registration site!

WHO SHOULD ATTEND?

All VA-affiliated nonprofit research and education corporations (NPCs) are encouraged to send at least one staff member to the NAVREF 2010 Annual Conference.  Click on the Agenda link above or continue reading and you will see that sessions of interest to executive directors, senior staff, board members and VA attorneys will be offered.  This year, there will be particular emphasis on human resource management so bring your HR manager to learn and network.

WHAT IS ON THE PROGRAM?
The 2010 NAVREF Annual Conference will include management issues of importance to all NPCs with a special focus on human resource management.

On Sunday October 17, NAVREF will sponsor a special full-day workshop [8:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. for an added fee of $325.00] on Making QuickBooks Work for NPCs.  The workshop will focus on how to use QuickBooks to the fullest, including automating frequent transactions and generating customized reports.  The fee for the workshop is $325.00 and includes breakfast and breaks.

On Sunday afternoon, executive directors interested in becoming involved in NAVREF issues are encouraged to attend a special session on developing the next generation of leadership.  Learn what is involved and how you can make a difference in NAVREF activities. Then attend the NAVREF Annual Membership Meeting followed by our annual "Welcome!" reception and dinner.

Monday's general sessions will begin with a keynote speech by Phil Longman, Senior Research Fellow of the New America Foundation, author of The Best Health Care Anywhere, a book that chronicles the transformation of the Veterans Health Administration.  Mr. Longman will share his views on how VA R&D supports quality care.  The program will continue with NPC specific issues from NPC/VA success stories to setting fair executive compensation and handling the relatedness question on IRS Form 990.

Key personnel from the Congressionally Directed Medical Research Programs (CDMRP), Department of Defense, will offer guidance on facilitating interactions between CDMRP and NPCs submitting proposals for CDMRP funding opportunities.   The day will conclude with updates from the Office of Research and Development and the Nonprofit Program Office including the results of the June 2010 annual reports to VA and plans for  future oversight of the NPCs.

On Tuesday attendees will take part in a special workshop entitled It's All About the People:  Human Resource Management for Your NPC.  Sandra Allgeier, SPHR, is a well-known speaker and expert in the human resource world.  She will give you a birds-eye view of HR management, clarifying the roles and responsibilities of NPC managers as well as thoughtful discussion of setting compensation and benefits.  Your NPC employees are your greatest assets; learn ways to recruit and retain the best.

Concurrently, on Tuesday the Office of General Counsel (OGC) will offer a full-day special session for VA attorneys.

The conference will conclude on Wednesday with an opportunity for you to ask questions in open forums.  There will be three open forums organized by NPC size as well as an open forum on CRADA issues conducted by the Technology Transfer Program office.

The conference will end with a hands-on session that will walk you through the revised VHA Handbook 1200.17.  Please be sure that your travel departure plans accommodate time for this last session so you can take full advantage of the important information that will be shared.

Following the formal conclusion of the conference, NAVREF will offer a special post-conference wrap-up session for new NPC executive directors and new board members.  This will be an opportunity for new executive directors and new board members to ask questions about issues that went by too quickly during the conference and those pesky acronyms.
