Modeling of Chemistry Using the Direct Simulation Monte Carlo Method

Many of the applications of the direct simulation Monte Carlo (DSMC) method involve chemical reactions. Hypersonic flows around aerospace vehicles are strongly influenced by chemistry whether it is in air of or the atmosphere of a planetary body. Materials processing systems use chemical reactions to create radicals to react with substrate surfaces. In the last forty years, the development of chemistry models for use in DSMC has evolved from phenomenological approaches to the more recent use of reaction cross sections evaluated by computational chemistry techniques. In this talk, the full spectrum of DSMC chemistry models will be reviewed and evaluated in terms of the needs required from them for different applications.
