Portfolio Showcase
mandatory Portfolio Showcase Release Form

The New England SCBWI is thrilled to once again present The Portfolio Showcase for Illustrators. Professional art directors and agents will judge the Portfolio Showcase, with prizes awarded to one winner and two runners-up.

On Friday, April 20, from 5:30 pm to 7:00 pm, the Portfolio Showcase will be open to all conference attendees. From 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm, the Portfolio Showcase will be open for our specially invited art directors, editors, and agents from our faculty. Then from 9:00 pm to 10:15 pm the Portfolio Showcase will be open to all attendees. The Portfolio Showcase is a fantastic opportunity for the illustrators who attend the Conference to have a showcase of their work seen by members of the publishing community.

It is free to participate, but space is limited and will be awarded on a first-come, first-served basis. Please sign up for the Portfolio Showcase in the bonus activities when you register for the conference. You must register for BOTH Friday and Saturday of the conference in order to participate in the Portfolio Showcase.

Please fill out the Portfolio Showcase Illustration Release Form and bring it with you when you drop off your portfolio from 4:30 pm to 5:30 pm on Friday night in the Mahogany room. Portfolios must be picked up by 10:30 pm on Friday. Note: No portfolios will be accepted without a release form.

Illustration Challenge
and
R. MICHELSON EMERGING ARTIST AWARD
mandatory Illustration Challenge Release Form

NOTE:
You do NOT need to participate in the Illustration Challenge in order to apply for the award.
Please click here for more information on the R. Michelson award.

In keeping with our theme, Dream. Explore. Create., we invite you to enter the Illustration Challenge. Your artwork will be displayed in the hallway all day Saturday, April 21st for everyone to see. This is a great portfolio building exercise and a wonderful promotional opportunity.

In addition, Rich Michelson will choose an artist (Unpublished and a New England SCBWI member) from this assignment for the R. Michelson Galleries Emerging Artist Award, which is inclusion in the annual Children's Book Illustration show in November. The R. Michelson Galleries Award competition is open to all NESCBWI Illustrators who are unpublished and attending the conference.

The Illustration Challenge, however, will be open to all SCBWI members attending the conference.

CHALLENGE:
This year’s challenge is a Fairytale Mashup. Choose a pivotal scene, or make up your own, that includes characters from at least two different fairy tales (ala The Jolly Postman). Interpret it any way you like. Rewrite fairy tale lore. Anything goes as long as it is kid through teen friendly. Create an engaging and creative image!

Please fill out the Illustration Challenge Release Form and bring it with you when you drop off your poster on Saturday morning between 7:30 am and 8:30 am outside the 3rd floor Ballroom. Posters must be picked up by 4:00 pm on Saturday.

Note:
No posters will be accepted that morning if you have not previously signed up, signed a release, or been told you are off the waitlist..

Click here for more detailed guidelines regarding both the Illustration Challenge AND the Michelson Award.

Critiques and Consultations

Four types of critiques/consultations are available this year: Manuscript Critiques, Agent Quick Query Critiques, Portfolio Critiques, and Social Media Consultations. All one-on-one critiques and consultations happen during Friday and Saturday workshops. Feel free to QUIETLY slip in/out of your workshop to attend your critique. Please check your volunteer and/or workshop schedules before signing up for a critique slot. Writing professionals will be available in the One-on-One Support Room to help you prepare before or process the feedback after your critique. Feel free to drop by and utilize this support!

PLEASE NOTE:
The critique and consultation schedules fill up quickly once online registration opens.
Please review the critique faculty bios and make a note of ALL the critiquers/consultants you would be happy to meet with; knowing this information in advance will allow you to proceed more quickly through the SIgnUpGenius scheduling process. It will also ensure that, regardless of which critiquers/consultants are already fully booked by the time you register, you will still be able to choose someone who will be a good fit for your work.

For all critiques and consultations:

  • Attendees registered or Friday ONLY are NOT eligible for any critiques/consultations. Attendees registered for Saturday ONLY who wish to sign up for a critique MUST pick a Saturday slot.
  • Attendees registered for BOTH Friday and Saturday may sign up for a critique on either day. (Critiques are not held on Sunday.)
  • You may only schedule critiques/consultations on day(s) you are attending the conference.
  • You may only sign up for ONE (1) of each type of critique/consultation, but you are welcome to sign up for one critique of all four types if you’d like.
  • Attendees who do not follow these guidelines will void their eligibility for critiques/consultations and will be removed from their slot.
YOU MAY ONLY SCHEDULE A CRITIQUE/CONSULTATION ON A DAY ON WHICH YOU ARE A REGISTRANT.

Important Registration Tips from the Conference Critique Team
Laura Woollett, Kristine Asselin, Sarah Lynne Reul

For more information about the Critique Faculty, see the Faculty Bios page. Make note of a few who look like they might be a good match for you. Have at least three or four who you'd be willing to sit with. You will be able to choose ONE faculty member and time slot. However, if we cannot give you your preferred time and/or faculty member, we will let you know and ask you to choose another.

Before you register for the conference, go to SignUpGenius.com and register for a free account. In order to register for these Bonus Activities, [Agent Quick Query Critiques (AQQ), Manuscript Critiques (MS), Social Media Consultations (SMC), or Portfolio Critiques (PF)], you must have a SignUpGenius account. SignUpGenius is the third-party service we use for attendees to register for these Bonus Activities and to indicate their critique faculty preference. If you have an account before registration opens, you'll be able to get into the system faster.

Register as early as you can. Online Registration opens at 12:00 pm on Sunday, February 25th. Slots will fill up, so we recommend registering within the first week or two to ensure you get a spot. BUT DON'T PANIC, there are a lot of critique slots, and if you have several faculty choices and can be flexible, you will likely be able to choose one of your top picks.
