Additive Manufacturing Seminar & Tour
Aug. 29, 2012 | 9am – 4:45pm | $395
Greater Columbus Convention Center | Columbus, Ohio

Materials and processing advances have propelled additive manufacturing – popularly known as "3-D printing" – well beyond the realm of prototypes. This process now is being used to produce low-volume, complex, high-precision components out of engineering-quality plastics and metals, especially in aerospace, medical, dental and automotive commercial applications. But many manufacturers still think of AM as a rapid prototyping process only, and do not fully recognize its potential or how it can aid their business.

In this seminar hosted by Plastics News, learn how to leverage this powerful tool to assist with product development, end-use parts manufacturing, and even sales and marketing. Some molders are using AM to win new customers and even turning it into an entirely new business stream. The presentations and panel discussions, including lunch, will run from 9 am till about 3 pm, followed by an optional site visit (see details below).

   • Tim Caffrey, associate consultant of Wohlers Associates, and key figure in the annual AM industry “bible” – the 270-page Wohlers Report.
• Bryan Crutchfield, managing director of the U.S. arm of Belgium’s Materialise NV, which has been active in this field since 1990.
   • David K. Leigh, co-founder of Harvest Technologies, which builds prototypes and production parts for various industries, and for firms such as Boeing Corp.

Optional EWI Tour
At the close of this seminar, from approximately 3:30-4:45 pm, attendees also will be able to tour EWI (formerly the Edison Welding Institute), a nonprofit firm that for three decades has helped manufacturers improve operational efficiencies through innovative materials joining and allied technologies.

Particpants will visit EWI’s nearby, 132,000-square-foot facility with more than $20 million in capital equipment. The facility includes an Additive Manufacturing Consortium, as well as advanced technologies related to laser welding and ultrasonic welding.
