Seminar Description

To help instructors fine-tune their approach to participant-centered learning, Harvard Business Publishing offers a seminar on the art and craft of discussion leadership. Attendees experience the seminar both as instructor and student. First, as an instructor, by learning techniques for orchestrating classroom discussion, blackboard management, discussion plan preparation, etc. Second, as a student, by preparing and discussing cases about both teaching and traditional business issues.

This seminar will be hosted by ESSEC Business School and is open to all teaching faculty at degree-granting institutions.

Art & Craft of Discussion Leadership Part I
This seminar is intended for all instructors, regardless of their level of experience with participant-centered learning. The seminar covers a broad range of topics, including:
  • Establishing and reshaping the learning contract
  • Questioning, listening, and responding
  • The teacher/student relationship
  • Designing the discussion plan
  • Practicing the skill
Who should attend?
This seminar is offered only to teaching faculty at degree-granting institutions. Registrations will be cancelled for corporate trainers, government employees, and teachers in other non-degree-granting programs.

Registration details and pre-reading assignments
The academic registration fee is USD $795. This includes program materials and meals while the seminar is in session. Pre-work will be emailed to participants three weeks prior to the seminar.

All sessions will be conducted in English. Proficiency in spoken and written English is essential, as participants will be required to contribute to fast-moving discussions during classroom sessions and group work.

We welcome up to 10 faculty from each participating university.

Registration is secured when you receive a registration number. Space is limited and offered on availability.
