With great pleasure, we announce that Sasha Abramsky will be joining us as our keynote speaker on Wednesday, April 16, 2014.
Mr. Abramsky is a freelance journalist and author. His work has appeared in The Nation, The Atlantic Monthly, New York Magazine, Salon, Slate, The Village Voice, and Rolling Stone. His most recent book The American Way of Poverty: How the Other Half Still Lives is an in depth look at poverty in 21st century America. (View the book trailer here.) His other works include: Inside Obama’s Brain; Breadline USA: The Hidden Scandal of American Hunger and How to Fix It ; American Furies: Crime, Punishment, and Vengeance in the Age of Mass Imprisonment; Conned ; and Hard Time Blues.
Originally from England and a current resident of Sacramento, California, Mr. Abramsky is a graduate of Oxford University and holds a master’s degree from Columbia University School of Journalism. In 2000 he was awarded an Open Society, Crime, and Communities Media Fellowship and is currently a Senior Fellow at the New York City-based Demos think tank. The California Coalition for Rural Housing (CCRH) Internship Program is offering an affordable housing tour of 7th & H Apartments. The tour will precede the program’s annual graduation event taking place at this site.
The 7th & H Housing Community is a mixed-use affordable housing development in Downtown Sacramento built by Mercy Housing California. The development is a model eight-story complex providing 150 studio and one-bedroom apartments for the formerly homeless.

A new film by the National Community Reinvestment Coalition, presented in partnership with the California Coalition for Rural Housing, Elder Financial Protection Network, and California Reinvestment Coalition. This 30-minute documentary tells the story of four older adults and their families who were victims of financial scams and abusive financial products. Expert panelists and speakers. Special guest speakers such as Attorney General Kamala Harris and Commissioner Jan Owen of the Department of Business Oversight are invited.
