London Conference 2014

London , London
Thursday, 13 February 2014

With London’s population growing bigger and faster than previously anticipated, this years’ Conference will ask what the implications on council services are at a time of austerity and discuss the key challenges and opportunities the capital will face in 2014 and beyond.

London generates around 20 million tonnes per annum of solid waste, of which London authorities are responsible for approximately 20%. With the annual bill for waste collection and disposal in London being the third largest area of local authority expenditure, the pressure still remains with the councils to continue to find savings yet at the same time still delivering quality standards of service.

“We are all concerned by the leveling off of recycling rates. But, it is the same around the country, not just in London. We have a high population churn and a lot of people for whom English is not their first language, so communication is a challenge. We are working with LWARB to try and change that” Matthew Pencharz, Senior Advisor for Environment and Energy, Mayor’s Office

This year’s conference will address in more detail some of the issues highlighted within Mr Pencharz, comments. Key topics include; communication and community engagement; trade waste; saving money by working together; the pros and cons of standardisation and how to stop plateauing recycling rates. This event is a must for local authority officers and waste management contractors.

Whilst this event will focus on London, many other major cities are faced with similar issues, delegates from outside of London are welcome to learn from the experience of London’s waste managers and debate the issues that matter.
