Washington Educational Research Association (WERA) and the Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI) present the WERA/OSPI Annual Conference on December 9-11, 2015 at the Hilton Seattle Airport Hotel and Conference Center. The annual conference is also supported by the National Council for Computer Education (NCCE).

All registrants will automatically receive one year WERA membership as a benefit of registering for the Conference.
REGISTER NOW to join your colleagues from across the state for this outstanding event. The conference will feature two nationally known keynote speakers, a Pre-Conference day filled with workshops on topics of particular interest, and two days of breakout presentations from educators across the state. There will be presentations of value for teachers, principals, curriculum specialists, central office staff, and post-secondary educators.

>We continue our focus on PreK-3rd Grade issues with Pre-Conference sessions and many breakout sessions during the conference. 
>National Council for Computer Education (NCCE) will provide Tech sessions.

CONFERENCE REGISTRATION AWARDS AVAILABLE:  The purpose of the 2015 WERA Conference Registration Award is to increase awareness of WERA with preference given to persons from Eastern Washington who have not attended or from Eastern Washington school districts which have been underrepresented at previous conferences. Limited funds available. To apply, complete the 2015 WERA Conference Registration Award nomination form and return before November 18.

KEYNOTE SPEAKERS


Thursday – Pat Wasley, Founding Chief Executive Officer, Teaching Channel
Pat Wasley is Chief Executive Officer for Teaching Channel. Pat began her education career as apublic school teacher in the U.S. and in Australia. She has been a public school administrator, a researcher, a university professor and a dean of both the Bank Street Graduate School of Education and the University of Washington College of Education. Along the way, she has worked in a variety of roles to understand how to prepare and support teachers as they develop an ever-growing and sophisticated repertoire of approaches for working with children.
Pat is also the author of numerous articles and several books on school reform, including Teachers Who Lead and Stirring The Chalkdust. She is co-author of Kids and School Reform, which investigates the relationship between school change and students’ academic achievement. She is a past board member of the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards and past president of the Washington Association of Colleges of Teacher Education. She was a founding partner of Educurious, an innovative curriculum development group. In her role at Teaching Channel, she continues to collaborate with teachers across the United States and in other countries to improve conditions that enable teachers to be more successful in educating American children.


Friday – Tim Shanahan, 
Distinguished Professor Emeritus, University of Illinois at Chicago
Timothy Shanahan is Distinguished Professor Emeritus at the University of Illinois at Chicago where he is Founding Director of the UIC Center for Literacy. He is also Visiting Research Professor at Queens University, Belfast, Northern Ireland. Previously, he was director of reading for the Chicago Public Schools. He is author/editor of more than 200 publications including the books, Teaching with the Common Core Standards for the English Language Arts, Early Childhood Literacy, and Developing Literacy in Second-Language Learners.
His research emphasizes the connections between learning to read and learning to write, literacy in the disciplines, and improvement of reading achievement. Professor Shanahan is past president of the International Reading Association. He received a presidential appointment to serve on the Advisory Board of the National Institute for Literacy. Shanahan took a leadership role on the National Reading Panel (NRP), and chaired two other federal research panels, the National Literacy Panel for Language Minority Children and Youth, and the National Early Literacy Panel, and was a member of the English Language Arts Work Team for the Common Core State Standards. He received the William S. Gray Citation for Lifetime Achievement and the Albert J. Harris Award for outstanding research on reading was inducted to the Reading Hall of Fame in 2007.
