Faculty Feature

Scor! is pleased to invite Dr. Robert Gardner back to Chesapeake Scor! this summer. Not only will you benefit from Dr. Gardner's tremendous skill as an instructor, you will enjoy his extraordinary bass-playing ability at the faculty recital, and his personable, easy-going demeanor. Dr. Gardner is a treasure at Scor!, and we are thrilled to have him back once again!

Dr. Gardner has served on the faculty of Penn State since 2003. He is an assistant professor of music education, specializing in stringed instrument playing and teaching, alternative styles for string ensembles, and orchestral conducting. A double bassist and conductor with experience in a variety of musical genres, Dr. Gardner has written articles for the American String Teacher and GIA Publications, and has given presentations at conferences and workshops throughout the country. Dr. Gardner's research has focused on the nature of improvisation and composition, as well as the supply and demand of American public school music teachers. He received his undergraduate degree in music education from the Ohio State University, and his master's and Ph.D. degrees in music education from the Eastman School of Music. Prior to joining the faculty at Penn State, he served as orchestra director and instructor for public school districts in Ohio and New York. Gardner was also music director for two youth orchestras at the Hochstein School of Music and has been guest conductor for many honors ensembles. He has designed and directed programs for adult learners and alternative styles for string ensembles.

For you! You will love and treasure your Scor! experience, specially designed for adult string players like you. A camper recently wrote of Scor!, "No one can deny the importance of music in a child's life. Of equal (or more) importance is the discovery and development of music appreciation and participation for adults.  One of Scor!'s strongest contributions to the love of music is sharing talent and enthusiasm for adults."

The building Scor! is truly a labor of love--by campers, founders Kyle & Beth Bultman, donors, faculty, board members, volunteers, sponsors, and more! This has resulted in the one-of-a-kind Scor! 'flavor' or 'vibe'... As a recent multi-year camper puts it, "The atmosphere at Scor! is uniquely infectious and powerful. First-timers catch the spirit immediately. Scor! deserves the support of everyone who loves music & people."
