Who should apply?

These institutes are designed for curriculum coordinators, FOSS consultants involved in middle school professional development, and grades 6-8 science teachers using FOSS materials in their classrooms. Teams from districts are encouraged to apply. After attending each institute, participants will be prepared to introduce the FOSS course to other educators and to support them in their teaching. Participants will have a good understanding of the pedagogy of the course and its connections to the Next Generations Science Standards. Each participant will receive a set of the teacher and student print materials as well as access to the FOSSweb multimedia resources. FOSS Middle School Summer Institutes 2017


Electromagnetic Force, Next Gen Short Course
(2 days: Tuesday, July 11 - Wednesday, July 12)

  • Experience the FOSS Electromagnetic Force Next Generation Course, including three-dimensional learning (core ideas, science and engineering practices, and crosscutting concepts), embedded notebooking, ELA support, and assessment. 
  • Learn about the anchor and investigative phenomena that drive the development of student understanding of force, fields, and energy. 
  • Registration fee: $175

Gravity and Kinetic Energy, Next Gen Short Course
(2 days: Thursday, July 13 – Friday, July 14)

  • Experience the FOSS Gravity and Kinetic Energy Next Generation Course, including threedimensional learning (core ideas, science and engineering practices, and crosscutting concepts), embedded notebooking, ELA support, and assessment. 
  • Learn about the anchor and investigative phenomena that drive the development of student understanding of Newton's Laws. 
  • Registration fee $175

Waves, Next Gen Short Course
 (2 days: Monday, July 17 – Tuesday, July 18)

  • Experience the FOSS Waves Next Generation Course, including three-dimensional learning (core ideas, science and engineering practices, and crosscutting concepts), embedded notebooking, ELA support, and assessment. 
  • Learn about the anchor and investigative phenomena that drive the development of student understanding of waves
  • Registration fee $175

Heredity and Adaptation, Next Gen Short Course
(2 days: Wednesday, July 19 – Thursday, July 20)

  • Experience the FOSS Heredity and Adaptation Next Gen Short Course, including three-dimensional learning (core ideas, science and engineering practices, and crosscutting concepts), embedded notebooking, and assessment. 
  • Learn about the anchor and investigative phenomena that drive the development of student understanding of evolution. 
  • Registration fee $175
