Map and Directions

Improving learning opportunities and ensuring equity and access to quality teaching for every student begins with creating a coherent, system-wide vision of instruction and learning. The Institute for Learning believes that every leader within a system can and should contribute to school improvement. When working together toward a common vision, systems run more smoothly and function to invite, support and sustain a robust culture of continuous improvement.

The 2018 IFL National Conference will engage educational leaders from across the country in conversations built around the coherence needed in systems to bring about school improvement for a diverse student population, which includes a focus on the development of student and teacher agency. The IFL will provide opportunities for educators to engage in sessions to thoughtfully examine how districts identify problems of practice and implement and refine solutions that consider and benefit every student and the rich experiences they bring with them into the classroom.

IFL has designed this personal conference for district leaders to interact with notable figures and thought-leaders with expertise in system coherence, continuous improvement culture, and student and teacher agency. Through a series of expertly moderated and highly interactive discussions featuring Institute for Learning Directors: Anthony Petrosky, Christian Schunn, and Lindsay Clare Matsumura; Dean of the College of Education at the University of Pittsburgh, Valerie Kinloch; Lee L. Jacks Professor of Education at Stanford University, Kenji Hakuta; Senior Fellow at the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching, Sandra Park; Distinguished Professor and Dean Emerita at the University of Colorado, Lorrie Shepard; Elizabeth and Edward Conner Professor of Education and Affiliated Professor of Mathematics at the University of California at Berkeley, Alan Schoenfeld; Host of NPR’s Latino USA, Maria Hinojosa; and NYU doctoral candidate Anindya Kundu.

IFL Fellows will adeptly engage with participants in a high quality, intellectually stimulating and energizing program designed to meet the conference objectives. Participants will emerge with new thinking, transformative tools, mini-plans, and resources on how to build a coherent, aligned system that clearly communicate the district’s beliefs, culture, and expectations. Leaders who bring a team will begin to create urgency, galvanize school or district action, and begin to prepare the team so that significant progress can be accomplished through their collective efforts.
