CONFERENCE DESCRIPTION

Many outbreaks of waterborne illness caused by viral and bacterial agents, such as E. coli, Campylobacter, hepatitis A, and Noroviruses, can be attributed to subsurface contamination. However, satisfactory mitigation strategies to reduce the likelihood of subsurface contamination by pathogens are still lacking in part because their transport and survival must be better understood.

The Canadian Water Network and National Water Research Institute (U.S.) developed the First International Conference on Microbial Transport and Survival in Porous Media to advance our understanding of the transport and survival of microorganisms and, particularly, pathogens in subsurface environments and the associated risk of pathogen contamination in groundwater.

This conference is designed to bring together international experts and stakeholders interested in the broader area of microbial transport and fate in porous media so that state-of-the-art knowledge from various disciplines and application areas can be synthesized and applied to the issue of pathogens in subsurface environments. Fate and transport application areas may include pathogens in groundwater, riverbank filtration, engineered (conventional) filtration, bioremediation, aquifer storage and recovery, and others.

The conference will include technical presentations, as well as awards for best student presentation and poster. In addition, the conference will include roundtable discussions and an international panel discussion addressing research needs.

Special Issue of Water Research

Individuals interested in the conference topics are encouraged to submit a paper to a special issue of Water Research dedicated to the topic of “Transport and Fate of Colloids and Microbes in Granular Aqueous Environments,” which will be guest edited by Drs. Monica Emelko and Nathalie Tufenkji.  Manuscripts that comprise the basis for presentations at the conference are also welcome.
