John Bradshaw, MA, Fellow of The Meadows, has combined his exceptional skills as counselor, author, theologian and public speaker for the past four decades to become a world-renowned figure in the fields of addictions, recovery, family systems and the concept of toxic shame. John has written three New York Times best-selling books: Homecoming: Reclaiming and Championing Your Inner Child, Creating Love, and Healing the Shame That Binds You. His latest book is titled Reclaiming Virtue: How We Can Develop the Moral Intelligence to Do the Right Thing at the Right Time for the Right Reason.
Healing the Shame that Binds You
In John Bradshaw's New York Times best-selling book, Healing the Shame That Binds You, he introduced us to the concept of toxic shame; this workshop offers new strategies for healing that shame. Neuroscientific research has clearly established the "affect system" as the primary motivator of human behavior and the nondominant hemisphere as the seat and regulator of the affect system. No affect is more vital for our dignity, honor, and sense of self than shame. When the nondominant hemisphere is dysfunctional, our sense of shame becomes toxic and reactive. We now understand that the healing of toxic shame involves strategies aimed at the intuitive "felt thought" cognition of the nondominant part of the brain. This workshop will introduce several "right brain" (nondominant) healing strategies, such as music and poetry, as well as other exercises aimed at ameliorating the intensity of toxic shame scenes stored in the brain's amygdala.
Participants will learn:
* How the affect shame becomes a toxic identity
* The critical importance of rapport and prudent "self-disclosure"
* Why the "talking cure" is limited
