Culture: What It Is and How It Affects Every Aspect of an International Experience:

  • Research regarding how cultural values affect expectations about academic achievement, teacher student relationships, family roles, and even logical and scientific reasoning.   

Cultural Values that have a Direct Impact on Goals and Expectations:  

  • Five core values and communication styles that differ around the world.    
  • Effects of cultural values and communication styles in the classroom and in personal relationships. 

Tuesday January 10th, 9:00-5:00  
The Emotional, Family and Social Side of International Student Programs:    

  • The transition cycle students can be expected to go through and how to optimize adjustment. 
  • What "culture shock" looks like in high school students, why it happens and what can be done to help. 
  • Common challenges in home and host country friendships and family relationships.    
  • Recognizing discrepancies in expectation and educational goals held by teachers, staff, students and host and natural parents. 
  • Strategies for clarifying expectations and goals. 
  • Recognizing the impact of welcoming international students on the host family and school community. 
  • Strategies for maximizing a smooth transition.   

Optional Half Day Session - Wednesday January 11th, 9 AM -12 PM (Additional Charge)  

  • The Chinese High School abroad experience: why the extraordinary interest in American high schools? 
  • What is happening in China to have triggered this growth? 
  • What are the expectations of students and their families?
