Troy Mattson's Bio:  
Troy Mattson has been at the helm of the Northern Michigan women's basketball team since 2005. He has posted 150 wins as head coach, and his teams have qualified for the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Tournament six-straight years.

The 2013-14 season was capped by a trip to the NCAA Tournament after the Wildcats won the GLIAC  Tournament. Northern Michigan finished the year 22-8 (16-6 GLIAC) and were knocked out of the NCAA Tournament by fifth-seeded Quincy in an overtime thriller. 

The Wildcats won the conference tournament after earning the second seed through a tie breaker. That season, Alyssa Colla was named to the Daktronics, Inc. All-Midwest Region second team, all-GLIAC first team and all-GLIAC defensive team.  Lauren Gruber was tabbed to the all-GLIAC second and defensive teams.

The Wildcats also had a memorable season in 2009-10. Northern Michigan finished 22-10 (16-6 GLIAC), placing second in the North Division. The Wildcats qualified for the NCAA Division II tournament and advanced to the semifinals of the Midwest Regional by defeating Indianapolis, 52-51. They also advanced to the GLIAC Tournament championship game, where they fell to Michigan Tech.

From 1994 to 2005, Mattson was the associate head coach of the Northern Michigan men’s basketball team. He joined the program as an assistant coach in 1988. He also served as the head Wildcat women’s tennis coach from 1994 to 2003, earning GLIAC Coach of the Year accolades in 2000 and 2002. His teams made three-straight NCAA II Tournament appearances from 2001 to 2003.

Before he joined the Wildcat staff, he served as the assistant men’s and women’s basketball coach at Lake Superior State from 1986 to 1988. He began his coaching career at Munising High School, where he was the boy’s basketball coach during the 1985-86 season.

A Milwaukee, Wis., native who grew up in Ishpeming, Mattson is a 1981 Westwood High School graduate. He earned his bachelor’s degree from Northern Michigan in 1986, where he was a four-time letterwinner (1982-85) as a point guard. He was the 10th player in school history to score 1,000 career points.

Mattson is currently 27th on the career scoring list with 1,018 points. He is third in career assists with 486 and is tied for third in most assists in a single season with 187. During his junior and senior years, Mattson helped lead the Wildcats to the NCAA II playoffs. He served as team captain his senior year.
