AALT Conference 2018 - Unearthing Potential

Friday Keynote:

Donna DesRoches


Donna spent most of her career as a teacher-librarian starting with a five year stint at Winston Churchill  High School in Lethbridge, Alberta and 20 years at the North Battleford Comprehensive High School in North Battleford, SK. For the 10 years prior to retirement in 2017 Donna held the position of Learning Consultant for the Living Sky School Division. Her portfolio included school libraries and instructional technology.


Donna has been awarded the Saskatchewan School Library Association Connie Action Award of Merit, the Canadian Library Association National Teacher-Librarian of the Year, the Canadian Library Association Angela Thacker Award of Merit for her contribution to the field of teacher-librarianship, and the Saskatchewan School Library John G. Wright Distinguished Service Award.


Donna has been an active member of the Saskatchewan School Library Association serving two terms as President. She served on the Saskatchewan Ministry of Education working committees to create the documents Connections: Policy and Guidelines for School Libraries in Saskatchewan and Digital Citizenship in Saskatchewan Schools.


Donna has pursued a personal interest in international development as a local and national volunteer with Save the Children Canada. During her time as a National Chair she represented Canada at International meetings and toured projects in India and Ethiopia.


Donna spent 8 months in South and Central America where she combined her love of travel with volunteer work. She visited Save the Children projects and hiked the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu before returning to North Battleford.  


Saturday Keynote:
Tyler Enfield 
Tyler Enfield is an award-winning author and photographer. His novels include Madder Carmine, Hannah And The Magic Eye, and the Wrush series. His interactive film, Invisible World (National Film Board of Canada, 2017) was awarded three Alberta film awards. He lives in Edmonton with his family, where he's working on his newest book, The Dynamite Kid.


Sunday Keynote:
Shannon McClintock Miller

Shannon McClintock Miller is a mom and wife. She served as the K-12 district teacher librarian at Van Meter Community School District in Iowa for 10 years. Shannon is now an international speaker and consultant who has a passion for education, librarianship, technology, social media, and making a difference in the world and lives of others, especially children. She is the Future Ready Librarians and Project Connect Spokesperson working with librarians, educators and students around the country in person and online every day. Shannon is Buncee's Teacher Librarian Advisor and Cantata Learning's Teacher Librarian Advocate.


Shannon is the author of the award winning The Library Voice blog and enjoys writing for various blogs, journals and other forums including ISTE, School Library Journal and Publishers Weekly. She recently published her first 4 children’s books about library skills with Cantata Learning.


In 2014, she was named a Library Journal Mover and Shaker. In 2016, she was awarded the Making it Happen Award by ISTE.

Friday Night Activity

The Friday evening activity will be a hike in Drumheller, weather permitting.


Saturday Night Banquet

Saturday’s banquet promises a creative night where you can laugh, drink, and spend time with like-minded people. The after banquet entertainment will be a dinosaur themed Paint Night. Paint Night is not included in the total conference price, but will be optional instead. Even if you choose not to paint, you are welcome to stay and enjoy your fellow painter’s company.


Silent Auction

There are already some fabulous and exciting items to bid on but there is always room for more! If you have an item to donate to the Silent Auction, contact conference@aalt.org

Annual General Meeting

AALT AGM is scheduled for Saturday, May 12, 2018 at 12:45 pm.  The AGM package will be available on the website at www.aalt.org and from the AALT Secretary at secretary@aalt.org.

There are still positions available on the 2018-2019 AALT Board of Directors.  To have your name added to the elections ballot or for more information about the Board, please contact Theresa Remtulla at president@aalt.org.
