    Friday Speaker

Jay Bardyla has created a thriving community of literate nerds throughout Alberta.

As a co-owner of Happy Harbor Comics for 19 ½ years, he helped build an innovative and award-winning business that offered a variety of opportunities to artists, writers and educators. Happy Harbor has visited hundreds of schools and libraries to spread the joy of comics, creativity and literacy, as well as donating more than $10,000 worth of comics back to libraries with their Comic Book Fair program. He is looking forward to building even more communities in the future.

    Sunday Speaker

Tanya Ball (She/Her) is a Michif woman from Winnipeg, Manitoba in Treaty 1 Territory. She is currently living in Amiskwaciwâskahikan (Edmonton, Alberta) where she is enrolled in the PhD program with the Faculty of Native Studies at the University of Alberta. Here, she is working with her family from St. Ambroise to research the connections between Michif storytelling and experience of religion. She is also a sessional instructor at the School of Library and Information Studies at the University of Alberta teaching LIS 598 Indigenous Librarianship within a Canadian context.

Within the library world, Tanya was the first recipient of the University of Alberta Libraries’ (UAL) Indigenous Internship Program while she was working towards her Master of Library and Information Studies. During this time, she was also a library assistant at the Edmonton Public Library where she specialized in Digital Initiatives and programming with robotics. Upon graduation, she worked as an Academic Librarian Resident with a focus on Indigenous initiatives at UAL where she facilitated a research project to improve library services to Indigenous scholars.

Outside of libraries, Tanya gives back to her local Indigenous community, which takes place in a variety of ways. She has worked with Book Publishers Association of Alberta to update their descriptions of Indigenous materials. She volunteers with the Canadian Federation of Library Associations (CFLA) Indigenous Matters Committee as a member of the curriculum team. What is most rewarding to her, however, is mentoring upcoming Indigenous librarians by connecting them with Indigenous community organizations like Michif Cultural connections in St. Albert, Alberta.
