Understanding Dementia Care National Tour Dates
Senior Helpers & Teepa
AFA & Quilt to Remember
The Alzheimer’s Foundation of America, based in New York, is a leading national nonprofit organization that unites more than 1,600 member organizations nationwide with the goal of providing optimal care and services to individuals with Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias, and to their caregivers and families. Our programs stretch across the continuum of care, from annual events like National Memory Screening Day that stresses early detection to education about end-of-life planning; and are designed to meet the needs of all demographics, including ethnic populations and teen caregivers.
We are also actively engaged in advocacy to ensure funding for research for a cure and clinical care, and supportive services for family caregivers. AFA’s services include counseling and referrals by licensed social workers via a toll-free hot line, e-mail, Skype and live chat; educational materials; a free quarterly magazine for caregivers, care ADvantage; an AFA Teens branch to educate and engage youth; and a professional training and membership division, Dementia Care Professionals of America. The AFA Quilt to Remember is the first national dementia-related quilt of its kind—grand in scale and continuously growing as individuals and organizations from across the country contribute panels. This emotional work of art is composed of creative and heartfelt quilt squares that pay tribute to individuals with Alzheimer’s disease or a related dementia, caregivers and healthcare professionals so that others can recognize the reality and enormity of this disease. Unveiled in Central Park in New York City in 2006, the AFA Quilt to Remember tours, in whole or in part, to towns and cities across America to “speak for those who can no longer speak for themselves.” The collection represents not only the 150+ panelmakers, but the millions who are affected by Alzheimer’s disease nationwide.
