Practical Peacebuilding

New York, New York
Wednesday, January 09, 2013
Practical Peacebuilding teaches participants to prepare to engage conflict constructively, strengthens skills necessary to facilitate a conflict transformation process, and identifies spiritual practices and resources vital to sustaining this important work. The curriculum incorporates time for worship and reflection so that participants attend to God's presence in their lives, in sites of conflict, and in the process of transformation.

Thursday: Prepare to Engage Conflict Constructively
This requires thorough self-assessment and contextual analysis. Why do you respond to conflict the way you do? What are your strengths? What do you need to work on? What is generating this particular conflict? What resources exist within your context for engaging the conflict constructively? During this session, participants also will reflect on their understanding of conflict itself and are encouraged to see conflict as an opportunity to change rather than solely as a threat.

Friday: Facilitate the Conflict Transformation Process
There are many different approaches to conflict transformation. During this second day, participants will get an overview of a mediation process with a focus on practicing and refreshing their skills. They will spend the afternoon in role plays relevant to their particular vocational contexts.

Saturday: Sustain the Work of Conflict Transformation
Because this work is both demanding and ongoing, it is crucial to cultivate spiritually sustaining resources and practices. We will spend this final morning together identifying spiritual practices and resources within and beyond participants' own communities, to sustain them as they continue in this difficult vocation of conflict transformation.

The location for all functions and sessions is the Desmond Tutu Center unless otherwise noted.
