Preliminary Agenda


The Clarke Prize Conference will include a Conference that features presentations and panels on water sustainability.  The Conference is comprised of four sessions with speakers that will include past Clarke Prize recipients as well as representatives of water and wastewater agencies.

Following the Conference will be the Nineteenth Annual Clarke Prize Dinner and Award Ceremony, which will honor the 2012 recipient, Dr. Pedro Alvarez of Rice University.  During this event, Dr. Alvarez will also present the Clarke Lecture on “Convergence of Nanotechnology and Microbiology: From Risk Assessment of Nanomaterials in the Environment to Sustainable Water Disinfection and Microbial Control."

Presentation Speakers

Clarke Prize Laureates

Pedro Alvarez, Professor, Rice University, and 2012 Clarke Prize recipient, will speak on "Convergence of Microbiology and Nanotechnology: From Risk Assessment of Nanomaterials in the Environment to Sustainable Water Disinfection and Microbial Control."
 James L. Barnard, Ph.D., PR.ENG., BCEE James Barnard, Global Practice and Technology Leader for Advanced Biological Treatment at Black & Veatch Corporation, and 2007 Clarke Prize recipient, will speak on "Nutrient Recovery from Wastewater."
Menachem Elimelech, Ph.D. Menachem Elimelech, Professor, Yale University, and 2005 Clarke Prize recipient, will speak on "Seawater Desalination."

Bruce Logan, Professor, Penn State University, and 2009 Clarke Prize recipient, will speak on "Microbial Electrochemical Technologies (METs) Meet Salinity Gradient Energy."
Perry L. McCarty, Sc.D. Perry McCarty, Professor Emeritus, Stanford University, and 1997 Clarke Prize recipient, will speak on "Producing Energy, Not Biosolids, through Anaerobic Domestic Wastewater Treatment."
Bruce E. Rittmann, Ph.D. Bruce Rittmann, Director, Center for Environmental Biotechnology at Arizona State University, and 1994 Clarke Prize Recipient, will speak on "Using Photosynthetic Microorganisms to Generate Renewable Energy Feedstock
Joan B. Rose Ph.D.  
Joan Rose, Chair for Water Research, Michigan State University, and 2001 Clarke Prize recipient, will speak on "Great Lakes 100 Year View: Water Quality, Climate, and Health."
  Jerald Schnoor, Allen S. Henry Chair of Engineering, University of Iowa, and 2010 Clarke Prize recipient, will speak on "Water Quality Forecasting Using Cyber-Enabled Networks." 
George Tchobanoglous, Ph.D., P.E.  
George Tchobanoglous, Professor Emeritus, University of California Davis, and 2003 Clarke Prize recipient, will speak on "Direct Potable Reuse."



Water and Wastewater Agency Representatives
Paul Cook, of the Irvine Ranch Water District, will speak on "IRWD's Biosolids and Energy Recovery Project." 
The Metropolitan Water District of Southern California has been invited to deliver the Opening Presentation.
Michael Markus, of the Orange County Water District, will speak on "Maximizing Performance of Surface Water Recharge Facilities to Sustain Groundwater Basin Yield."
Jim McDaniel and Marty Adams, of the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power, will speak on "Owens Valley Watershed Management Program."
Shivaji Deshmukh, of the West Basin Municipal Water District, will speak on "Increased Production at Water Recycling Plant through Technology Improvements."
