The Affordable Care Act — Pay, Play, Delay: How to Make Valuable Use of the Delay Period
Presented by: Mike Nader and Mike MacLean

The hospitality industry is especially exposed to the adverse cost impact of the Affordable Care Act’s ‘Pay or Play’ mandate.  The Obama Administration recently announced that large employers have been granted a one-year reprieve before they either become subject to penalties or are forced to provide affordable coverage.  This session will discuss the practical impact of this delay, and opportunities for employers to mitigate their exposure under the ACA.

Can Employees Still Get Canned Over Cannabis?  What Will the New Illinois Medical Marijuana Law Mean for Employers
Presented by: Mary Will

Illinois recently enacted the Compassionate Use of Medical Cannabis Pilot Program Act, which becomes effective on January 1, 2014.  The Act permits the medical use of marijuana under certain conditions, and includes several employment-related provisions that protect qualified patients.  This session will provide practical advice on how employers can continue to restrict drug use in the workplace while undertaking best efforts to avoid violating the Act’s employee protections, and will provide examples of effective policies and procedures that have been implemented by employers in other states that already permit medical marijuana use.

The Ever-Changing Landscape of Social Media Use in the Workplace
Presented by: Stacey Smiricky and Lindsey Wills

With so many different federal and state laws relating to use of social media in the workplace, employers need to understand the rights and restrictions arising from those laws when implementing their employment policies and practices. They also need to stay abreast of the ever-changing landscape of court and administrative rulings interpreting and applying those laws in the employment context.  This session will provide an update on important recent legal developments in this area, with an emphasis on permissible and enforceable workplace policies and practices.

Ready, Aim, You’re Fired (Or Maybe Not…):  Employers’ Rights and Restrictions Under the New Illinois Concealed Carry Law
Presented by: Tom Posey

Can employees be prohibited from keeping a loaded gun locked in their personal car while they are at work?  Does every employee with a valid FOID card now have the right to carry a concealed weapon during working hours?   This session will address employers’ rights and limitations with regard to preventing employees from bringing firearms into the workplace in light of the new Illinois Firearm Concealed Carry Act.
