Rev. Dr. Yap Kim Hao  (Singapore)

Rev Dr. Yap Kim Hao, in his retirement from full-time Christian ministry, serves as Pastoral Advisor to the Free Community Church. Even as this ministry affirms LGBT people in opposition to the stance of the institutional church, he is convinced this is a ministry he cannot evade - to declare Christ’s inclusive love to those who have been ostracized and neglected by the Church.
Rev Dr. Yap was the first Asian Bishop of The Methodist Church in Malaysian and Singapore. Subsequently he served as General Secretary of the Christian Conference of Asia, an ecumenical organization of over a hundred churches and national council of churches in Asia. He holds a Master of Divinity and Doctor of Theology degrees from Boston University. In addition to his ministry with FCC, Dr Rev Yap continues to serve on the Council of the Inter-Religious Organisation (IRO) in Singapore and is committed to the promotion of inter-faith dialogue and understanding.

We read in 2 Corinthians 5:17 that all who are in Christ become new creations. If the church is in Christ, then the church itself is also called to become something new, something other than what the church has been. In this workshop, we will explore what it is to be a church and what we can do so that our churches today will become new creations in Christ, too.

Natasha began her journey in Christian music as a singer and worship leader at Hillsong Church and became a dedicated member of the creative ministries team, directing youth choirs, recording albums & building the youth ministry. It was within this season she began the journey of discovering her sexuality and having to choose between her love for worship, church and what was is now a big part of who she is. Following the Hillsong United album, Everyday, Natasha left Hillsong. In 2005 Natasha discovered Metropolitan Community Churches and has been an active member now for 7 years.

A gifted singer, songwriter and musician, Natasha is a passionate, dynamic performer and worship leader. Natasha has released songs such as If not us, who? Passion Is and Giving You Me, songs that are now sung around the world to inspire, rejuvenate and stand up for justice.

In many of our worshipping congregations, music and singing are a prominent feature of our services today. In this workshop we chat with worship leaders, musicians and producers to discuss the role of this time of worship, the places and spaces for renewal, address the challenges that they face and connect with their journeys as worshippers. Come with your questions - whether you are a singer, musician, on the production team, or if you are thinking about joining, starting or growing this ministry in your church!

AM-4. THE COMMUNICATION SKILL IN A 3 PEOPLE GROUP 三人小組的溝通技巧  (details)

Rev. Joe Pang (Hong Kong)

As a gay man, Joe has gone through his journey that began with self-denial and then seeking ineffective counsel and attempting corrective therapy until he met openly gay Malaysian Chinese Ngeo Boon Lin (O Young) in 2006 which began the reconciliation of his identity as a gay person with his Christian faith. In 2007, Joe set up the Good Samaritan Fellowship, which later on developed into the first open and affirming church that continues to minister to local LGBT community in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

Since 2007, Joe’s calling has been to establish churches for LGBT Christians and to help them on their journey to liberate them from religious discrimination so that all would experience God’s accepting and inclusive love. As such, Joe chooses to minster in places where there are similar challenges to overcome, including the long-held homophobic and trans-phobic practices and beliefs in places such as Malaysia, Hong Kong, China, and beyond.

In this workshop, we will practice communication that aims to help participants to become more confident, empowering and in harmony.  You will be equipped to resolve problems in church that are caused by misunderstanding and miscommunication.  May this experience be your positive and genuine learning journey.

PM-1. EROTIC RENEWALS: RETHINKING SEX AS LGBTQ CHRISTIANS  酷兒基督徒的性愛反思  (details)

Rev. Joseph Goh (Malaysia)

Rev. Joseph N. Goh holds a Licentiate in Sacred Theology (STL) and Master in Theology (ThM) from the Jesuit School of Theology of Santa Clara University in Berkeley, CA, and is finishing a PhD in Gender, Sexuality and Theology with Monash University, Malaysia. Goh is a member of the Emerging Queer Asian Pacific Islander Religion Scholars (EQARS), an ordained minister with the North American Catholic Ecumenical Church (NACEC), and editor of the Queer Asian Spirit E-Magazine (QAS E-Zine). He believes that sexually diverse and gender variant persons are called to reflect the face of a loving God.

We take a theological-pastoral approach in this workshop to reflect deeply on how sex can be a connective strategy with the divine, and how the divine can reside in sexual encounters. This is an avenue for you to (re)think the dynamics of sex as embodied Christians from queer Christian theological perspectives, identify the spiritual dimensions of the sexual act, to rethink notions of sexual guilt and shame, and to map healthy directions for our own sexual lives.

PM-2. RENEWING CULTURE; RENEWING THE CHURCH  更新文化:復興教會  (details)

Ps. Gary Chan (Singapore)

Gary grew up in the Presbyterian Church tradition. His adventure with God really got started in his early 20s when he committed his life to Christ in a Methodist church. He subsequently spent the next seven years learning to love God passionately in a large independent church with a strong focus on evangelism where he was involved in the worship ministry.

Gary was part of the team that started the Sunday Worship Service and developed the worship life at the Free Community Church - the first open and affirming church in Singapore. He is active today in church leadership at FCC and in developing ministry with other inclusive churches in the region. He graduated in 2011 with a Masters in Theology & Ministry from King's College, London.

We have created a culture in the church that recognizes and honours only the two percent that gets paid to be Christian. But it is the 98% who are the chosen people; the royal priesthood that are called to be that shining city on a hill and are the ones with the ministry to impact the culture and our communities. Explore together how to be that salt and that light of renewal.

PM-3.

Rev. Miak Siew (Singapore)

Rev. Miak Siew is the Executive Pastor of Free Community Church, Singapore. He holds a M.Div. from the Pacific School of Religion in Berkeley, USA and is an ordained minister in the Metropolitan Community Church (MCC).

Rev. Miak is passionate about brining change and transforming lives in the Christian community in Singapore and for all to live out the call to love God and to love the other - those who are different from us.

Spiritual growth is so much more than information transfer. Without relational connections, the church isn't a church. Community life that is created through intentional relationships through small (cell) groups is the foundation of healthy, growing churches. This workshop looks at how we can rethink the role of cell groups, the key principles of Christian community life, and how each one of us can effectively lead and facilitate a group.

The LGBTI movement as a collective social movement emerged in the aftermath of the Stonewall Rebellion is less than 50 years old, and yet it has had significant impact on the world. This workshop seeks to understand the historical development of the LGBTI movement, examine its impact on the theological discourse of Christianity and reflect upon the role of LGBTI Christians in reshaping the movement.
