Osterberg Memorial Lecture

Our 2017 Osterberg Memorial Lecture is Dr. Richard J. Finno, P.E., D.GE, Northwestern University. This prestigious lecture will be presented at the opening session of SuperPile ’17 on Thursday, June 15, titled Lessons (Re)learned from Geotechnical Failures. The lecture was established in honor of Dr. Jorj O. Osterberg, to recognize innovations in the deep foundations construction related to engineering design, testing or education.
In his Terzaghi Lecture entitled “Necessary Redundancy in Geotechnical Engineering,” Professor Osterberg discussed the causes of geotechnical engineering failures and presented eight cases to illustrate his points.  In keeping with his legacy, this lecture presents several geotechnical failures.  These case studies are related to earth retaining structures and foundations, two areas for which Professor Osterberg had a keen interest.  These cases will illustrate failures related to both serviceability and stability issues. This lecture will be presented on Thursday, June 15 at 8:45am and is included in the registration fee for the conference.

Ben C. Gerwick Innovation Award for Design and Construction of Marine Foundations
Robert B. Bittner, P.E., a past president of DFI and president of Bittner-Shen Consulting Engineers, is the recipient of the 2017 Ben C. Gerwick Award for Innovation in Design and Construction of Marine Foundations. Bittner is being recognized for his 46-year career and body of work in the marine foundations industry. The award and a lecture by Bittner are being presented at DFI’s SuperPile '17 Conference in Coronado, Calif. A portion of the proceeds from this event benefit the DFI Educational Trust Scholarship Fund.

The focus of Bittner's work has been on minimizing construction costs through the design and development of innovative methods and equipment for marine construction projects, which have been employed on the construction of major bridges, immersed tube tunnels, ocean outfalls and intakes, marine terminals, offshore structures, and locks and dams worldwide.

This lecture will be presented on Thursday, June 15 at 1:00 p.m. and is included in the registration fee for the conference.  For guest tickets, contact DFI at staff@dfi.org.

Information About PDHs

Professional Development Hours

An increasing number of professional engineering licensing organizations require members to pursue professional development on a formal basis. DFI is pleased to provide a general Certificate of Participation for all its technical programs. This certificate is accepted by most licensing boards and serves as documentation of your pursuit of continuing education credits. There are some states that may not accept the general DFI certificate. Attendees are responsible for determining whether or not DFI PDHs are accepted by their respective licensing board. The number of general PDHs for this conference are 5.5 hours on Day 1 and 4.5 hours on Day 2, totaling 10 hours for the entire conference.
NEW YORK: Approved New York State (NYS) Professional Development Hours are sought for all DFI events from the Practicing Institute of Engineers. PDHs will be determined when approval is received. Those individuals requiring NYS approved hours must follow the guidelines and procedures requested by event management to qualify. The procedure typically includes the need to sign-in at the Registration Desk as proof of your attendance at the entire event. This procedure is subject to change. The approved hours for this conference are: 

6/15 Plenary Session - 4.5 PDHs
6/16 Parallel A - 3.75 PDHs
6/16 Parallel B - 3.0 PDHs
6/16 Parallel C - 2.0 PDHs

If it does, you will be contacted by the Program Committee or the DFI Events Team. NOTE: Writing a technical paper is NOT required for this conference. If you choose, you are free to submit a paper to the DFI Journal for consideration.

You may continue to update your presentation and submit the final version by Friday, June 9, 2017. After this date, you must bring your presentation to the Speaker Preparation Meeting the morning of your presentation using a flash drive. The conference staff will load it to DFI’s laptop.
All speakers are encouraged to bring a back-up of their presentation on a flash drive.
Please be aware of the importance of limiting commercial aspects in your presentation and to focus on technical features. DFI reserves the right to later not accept a presentation that is too commercial. Additionally, unless your organization is a not-for-profit entity, corporate logos may appear on the first and last presentation slide only. Reference the Presentation Guidelines for details.

    Refunds for Registration will not be issued after Monday, May 22, 2017. Refunds for Exhibit Space will not be issued after Tuesday, May 16, 2017. However, you may transfer your registration to another DFI Member. 

    Images of individuals may be captured by the Deep Foundations Institute (DFI) during events/activities organized and hosted by DFI using still photography, video or any other medium. DFI reserves the right to use such images on the DFI website, in Deep Foundations Magazine, in newsletters and/or other publicity material.
