9:15 a.m. - 10 a.m. - Opening Presentation: Communicating the Value of Art 
As artists, arts administrators, and arts supporters, we all understand the importance and value of art. Helping others to understand and appreciate art, however, can be challenging and may present business and communication obstacles for those who create, sell and promote art in communities across the nation. Drawing from his own path as the founder of a successful arts nonprofit for youth and as the director of an arts festival, opening presenter Amir Jackson will discuss how to communicate the value of art in a manner to which the masses can connect and understand.


 10:30 a.m. - 12 p.m. - Get Your Story Out: Developing and Delivering your Message
Learn how shows and artists can work together to engage their audiences through multiple channels — from press, to social media, to one-on-one interactions. Everybody has a story, and through discussion and interactive exercises, this session will help you develop yours. Prepare to leave with the building blocks you need to deliver your freshly-honed story over a variety of platforms and a strategy to Get Your Story Out.

12 p.m. - 1 p.m. - Lunch
Continue the conversation with artists and show directors over a plated lunch. Meal tickets are required (these will be given out during registration check-in).

1:15 p.m. - 2:45 p.m. - Jury Workshop - Public Portfolio Critique

A panel of professionals will discuss image submissions in terms of composition, technical presentation, artistic presentation, and image quality. This session presents a great opportunity to see how images appear in the projected jury format and to also receive valuable feedback on improving jury slides.


2:45 p.m. - 3 p.m. - Mid-Afternoon Break 

3 p.m. - 5 p.m. - Mystery Unmasked: An Inside Look at the Jury Process
Ever wonder what jurors look for when scoring your applications? Do you want to know how important your booth shot is to certain shows? Questions abound when it comes to the business of jurying for art fairs and festivals. This session gives you an in-depth look at the inner-workings of some juries, including discussion on artist statements, booth shots, showing the price range of work, and more. Undoubtedly one of the most crucial parts of an art fair application process, come prepared to learn more about how juries are run and take away tips for navigating the jury process in the future.

9 a.m. - 10:30 a.m. - The Art of Savvy Marketing: A Digital Workshop
This informative workshop, led by seasoned art fair artist Ben Frey, will explore the ways in which you can up your technology game to better your business! Designed for technology users of all levels, come to this session prepared to learn how to use social media to your business advantage, how you can incorporate Instagram into your marketing and business efforts, and even how you can build a better website in just 30 minutes. This session is designed for artists and administrators.


10:30 a.m. - 12 p.m. - A Festival Every Day: Programming Arts in an Urban Public Market & Roundtable Discussion for Administrators  
This moderated roundtable session will open with a colorful, brief history of Seattle’s Historic Pike Place Market — which annually receives 9 million visitors — and the evolution of its daily arts programming. Drawing parallels between programming a year-round public market and producing “an arts festival every day,” the session will explore contemporary challenges of producing arts festivals and will discuss the ways in which administrators can turn challenges into opportunities.


10:30 a.m. - 12 p.m. - Meet & Greet with NAIA
The National Association of Independent Artists (NAIA) is a nonprofit organization made up of artists, art shows, and supporters whose mission is "to strengthen, improve, and promote the artistic, professional and economic success of artists who exhibit in art shows." Learn what the NAIA does, how you can get involved, and how the organization can advocate for you! Coffee, great conversation, and networking opportunities are all included.

12 p.m. - 1 p.m. - Lunch Buffet
Share ideas and meet new people as you enjoy a buffet-style lunch. Please indicate on your registration if you have dietary restrictions. 

1 p.m. - 2 p.m. - Organizational Strategies to Avoid Burnout
In this “leadershop,” participants will explore one of the biggest threats to productivity, nonprofits, and artist businesses: burnout. This session will examine the causes of burnout and identify strategies to avoid burnout in your own work. Volunteer recruitment, accountability, communication, and appreciation will also be discussed.

2 p.m. - 2:15 p.m. - Mid-Afternoon Break

2:15 p.m. - 2:45 p.m. - Artist Driven Data: An Art-Linx Presentation
The world of art festivals and fairs can be uniquely complicated. Many factors influence artists’ decisions to apply and participate in festivals nationwide. To help uncover industry trends and offer tips for administrators to better shape and more effectively plan events, Art-Linx will present findings from surveys conducted on a nationwide list of more than 16,000 artists. Come prepared to learn more about who makes up a large chunk of the artist user base, the geographic range of travel for artists, thoughts on the length of an application cycle, and much more!

2:45 p.m. - 4:30 p.m. - Connecting the Dots: Group discussion on the evolution of art fairs
Back again for 2018, the popular "Connecting the Dots" group discussion provides a platform for artists and administrators alike to discuss trends in the field, the history of art fairs, and the future of the industry! This is a great opportunity to discuss the state of the industry and share your feedback.

9:00 a.m. - Shuttle Pick Up
Meet in the hotel lobby for shuttle to Coconut Grove Arts Festival and St. Stephen’s Art Show. Pre-registration and purchase of a shuttle pass is required to board. Conference attendees will get a $10 discount on gate tickets to Coconut Grove Arts Festival.

2:00 p.m. - Shuttle Return
Meet for the return trip back to the hotel.
