We will start our day visiting the hill of Montjuic, which was the site of the 1929 international Expo and the nerve center of the 1992 Olympic Games. Nowadays, this area is still an important leisure center for the people of Barcelona and has amazing panoramic views over the city. We will then head by coach, to the Gothic Quarter and explore on foot the original heart of the city.  The Gothic Quarter consists of various architectural elements from different styles; giving us a glimpse into the two thousand year history of Barcelona. Our interactive guides will explore the sights and history of this area with visits to the Cathedral, Plaza del Rei, the Grand Royal Palace (former residence of the Counts of Barcelona), Torre del Rey Sant Martin, the Chapel of Santa Agata, and Plaça Sant Jaume.

We will stop for lunch at Restaurant Barceloneta, where we will enjoy excellent Mediterranean seafood while enjoying the exceptional views of the fishermen’s wharf and the marina on the Port of Barcelona.

Following lunch, we will travel by coach to one of Barcelona’s most famous landmarks; Sagrada Familia, an unfinished Roman Catholic church designed by Catalan Architect Antoni Gaudi’s (1852-1926).  This structure represents Guadi’s all-consuming obsession until his death. Guadi saw its completion as his holy mission, and it still remains under construction after more than 130 years. Sagrada Familia is intended to be a symbolic building with three façades dedicated to Christ’s Nativity, Passion and Glory.  You will surely be awed by the impressively intricate sculptural depictions.  Drawing much of his architectural inspiration from nature, you may experience the feeling of standing under tree-like pillars which soar up towards the ceiling and sprout out a web of supporting branches, creating the effect of a forest canopy.  The recent addition of the multi-colored stained-glass windows produces the mottled affect one would see with sunlight pouring through the branches of a thick forest. Our expert guides will provide us with stories and insights into the many symbolic features of this building.
Beyond the gates of Mount Vernon stands the 18th century home of America’s first President, George Washington. While touring the mansion, interactive visitor’s center, and Washington family museum, you can feel Washington’s presence throughout the plantation, from the gardens and greens to the original furnishings placed throughout this beautiful, Georgian-style manor house.

Coaches will transport us a short distance from Barcelona, up the 4,072-foot-high Montserrat mountain along hairpin curves, through magnificent scenery, and past remote hermitages. Built amid towering peaks in an almost inaccessible location, this sacred site has housed a monastery since the middle ages. The Monastery of Montserrat is a renowned shrine and home to many legends.  It is told that the Holy Grail was found here by Parsifal and this is the site where St. Peter hid a statue of the Virgin Mary carved by St. Luke.  Most famous of the relics is the Black Virgin Madonna, which was found buried in the mountain in the 12th century.  She is called Moreneta (the Brunette) and she is the Patroness of Catalonia.  During our trip, we will visit the basilica and view the Moreneta. Another highlight will be the visit to the Cami de la Cova, where the Virgin is said to have appeared.  Along with the Benedictine monks, Montserrat is also home to the Escolania, the oldest boys’ choir in Europe, founded in the 12th Century.

Our tour will then head to the seaside town of Sitges where we will enjoy a relaxing traditional Spanish lunch. Sitges, the site of Spain’s annual film festival, has always been a place that has enraptured artists, tourists and, in general, visitors from all over. For many people, the secret is in its light, as noted by painters, sculptors and writers who settled here at the end of the 19th century. Following lunch we will have an opportunity to walk around and explore the area before returning to the hotel.

The Cordoniu family history in winemaking dates back to 1551 and it currently operates as the oldest family company in Spain.  In 1895, Manuel Raventos hired the modernist architect Josep Puig I Cadafalch (Gaudi’s coeval) to enlarge his family’s winery. This impressive building design represents the fruitful alliance between nature and human labour. It is this place where the first bottle of Spanish sparkling wine was produced in 1872 by the traditional method and named “Cava”.  The Cordoniu cellars are the largest underground cellars in the world and in 1976 were declared “a National Monument of Historical and Artistic Interest” by King Juan Carlos I.

It is here at the Cordoniu winery, located in the hills of Sant Sadurni d’Anoia, where we will enter the mythical world of Bacchus; god of wine.  Under the late evening Spanish sun, we will be enchanted by the sounds of divine musicians as we take in the fanciful flavours of the winery’s fruitful harvest.  By way of trains, we will have an opportunity to explore the winery’s vast underground labyrinth of cellars.  Following our reception, as the night approaches, we will move into the dining hall for a magnificent feast and a dramatic performance of dance and music.  The evening is sure to be a pleasure for all five of your senses.

COMPANION TOUR: MODERNISM AND THE FANTASTICAL WORLD OF ANTONI GAUDI
(For Companions)

Friday, May 4, 2018
Meet in the Lobby: 9:15am
Return: 3:00pm

Price for guests: $240 USD*
Dress: Weather appropriate clothing and comfortable shoes.

During this tour, you will learn about Modernism and discover the imaginative world of Antonio Gaudi. Modernism is essentially a decorative style and a variation of art-deco. Its innovations are found in the daring stylistic solutions for façades and in building structures used in Barcelona.  The most notable feature of this style is the undulating and asymmetrical ornamental motifs, the composition of which is highly complex. In Barcelona, Antonio Gaudi conceived architecture as a form of sculpture and we will visit two main houses, Casa Batlló and Casa Milà (named La Pedrera), which provide excellent examples of his style.

Our first stop will be La Pedrera, where you will be able to visit the "Espai Gaudi", an interesting exhibition about the history and the various works of Antonio Gaudí.   You will also have the opportunity to view an apartment within the building which is on display as it was at the time when the building was originally constructed. We will make our way to the top of the building where we will  get up close to the famous chimneys; the surreal statue like structures perched on the roof.

Following this visit, we will promenade down the popular Passeig de Gràcia to reach the next house, Casa Batlló. The façade, sprinkled with bits of blue, mauve and green tiles, is studded with wave-shaped window frames and balconies. Locals refer to Casa Batlló as the “house of bones” or “house of the dragon”, which you can most certainly appreciate when viewing this building from the street. The internal light wells shimmer on the cascading tiles of sea blue mimicking the play of sunlight on the Mediterranean Sea. Everything swirls on the first level where the ceiling is twisted into a vortex around a sun like lamp.  The doors, window and skylights are dreamy waves of wood and coloured glass. The same themes continue in the other rooms and covered terrace. The attic is characterized by Gaudí trademark hyperboloid arches. Twisting, tiled chimney pots add to a fantastical touch to the roof deck.

After our visit to Casa Batlló, we will walk to restaurant Cachitos where we will enjoy an amazing tapas meal, before returning back to the hotel.
