K1: Keynote
Secure Attachment is The Key: The Impact of Developmental Trauma on Self and Brain

Bessel A. van der Kolk, MD
Bessel is a clinician, researcher and teacher in the area of posttraumatic
stress. His work integrates developmental, neurobiological,
psychodynamic and interpersonal aspects of the impact of trauma
and its treatment.
Dr. van der Kolk and his various collaborators have published
extensively on the impact of trauma on development, such as
dissociative problems, borderline personality and self mutilation,
cognitive development, memory, and the psychobiology of trauma.
He has published over 150 peer-reviewed scientific articles on such
diverse topics as neuroimaging, self injury, memory, neurofeedback,
Developmental Trauma, yoga, theater and EMDR.
Join this leading authority on trauma., and learn the latest on
how our brains and bodies respond to traumatic experiences.
Dr. van der Kolk will explain how affect modulation techniques,
EMDR, yoga and neurofeedback are used in overcoming
the destabilization and disintegration caused by trauma.
Take home an understanding of how these experiences are
processed by unconscious interpretations (subcortical) that
take place outside of awareness. Learn why therapeutic
methods that do not depend exclusively on understanding
and cognition are needed to move the client beyond the
“replay of the past” in their current experiences.

K2: Robert S Marvin: Healing Traumatized Attachments  (details)
K2: Healing Traumatized Attachments: Lessons from the Circle of Security Intervention

Robert S. Marvin, PhD
University of VA School of Medicine
Throughout his career Bob has been active in basic and clinical
attachment research, and research with families who have
children with chronic medical conditions and/or histories of
problematic or disrupted early relationships. With a variety of
colleagues, he has developed and tested numerous attachmentrelated
procedures that are used in basic and clinical research,
and in clinical practice. He has written and coauthored more than
75 articles, books and film documentaries on this work.
This keynote will begin with a “user-friendly” version of
scientific research on attachment bonds between parents
and children, the effects of trauma on both members of these
bonds and making empathic inferences about a child’s signals
and the needs underlying those signals. We will then focus
on many of the core components of the Circle of Security®
Intervention, including empathy toward both the child and the
parent, working on the relationship between child and parent,
developing skills in observing child-parent interactions, and
the power of video-review in the treatment of attachment
problems.

K3: Michael Trout: Mindfulness: Key to Working With, and Living With, Children of Loss and Trauma  (details)
K3: Mindfulness: Key to Working With, and Living With, Children of Loss and Trauma

Michael Trout, MA
The Infant-Parent Institute, Inc.
In the mental health field since 1968, and in private practice since
1979, Michael directs an institute engaged in research, clinical
practice and clinical training related to problems of attachment.
He was the founding president of the Michigan Association for Infant
Mental Health and the International Association for Infant Mental
Health, was on the charter Editorial Board of the Infant Mental
Health Journal, served as Vice-President for the United States for
the World Association for Infant Mental Health, and served on the
Board of Directors (and as Editor of the Newsletter) for APPPAH–the
international society for prenatal and perinatal psychology. He
currently serves on the Professional Advisory Board for Attachment
Parenting International.
This presentation will suggest that the centerpiece of our
clinical work with children of loss and trauma, and with
their families, is the same as the centerpiece of hoped-for
relationships at home: mindful self-knowing and selfregulation
that permits presence, attunement and following.
