Where will we stay when in Kenya?

While in Nairobi we will be staying as a group at a comfortable guesthouse. The accommodations are safe and secure, and a short drive from the training. Rooms will be double and triple occupancy with electricity, en-suite showers and toilets. The guesthouse will prepare vegetarian meals for our group and there is a comfortable community space for yoga classes and evening activities. When we travel to the National Park for safari we will have the opportunity to experience camping in a Masai village for one night and we will stay in a hotel the other night.

What kind of service project will we be doing?

Seva Safari teams do a variety of service projects while in country. We work alongside AYP’s partner organizations to complete projects that are inline with the mission of AYP. You will also have the opportunity to work with one of our partner organizations to come together to paint, build, and/or clean a project site where Africa Yoga Project students live.

Do you have suggestions to help me fundraise for AYP?

Yes. By registering for this Seva Safari you are committing to fundraising a minimum of $4,000 to cover the costs of the service projects and to help support the ongoing work of AYP. We can help you set up a web page on the AYP web site that will allow your friends and family to make a donation to AYP on your behalf. We encourage you to take this opportunity to mobilize your friends and family to support your work with AYP in Kenya. You can also work with your local yoga studio to hold a "donation class" with proceeds going toward your trip. We will send you more information on fundraising ideas once you register for the trip.

What kind of shots do I need to travel safely in Kenya?

You should consult your medical professional or a travel clinic, and the Center for Disease Control web site for information on vaccines and medications that are appropriate for you. See: http://wwwnc.cdc.gov/travel/destinations/kenya.aspx

Do I need a passport and visa to travel to Kenya?

Yes, you will need a valid passport that is good for at least 6 months and a Kenyan tourist visa. You can get a visa beforehand or at Kenyatta International airport upon your arrival. For more information on a single-entry tourist visa see: http://www.kenyaembassy.com/services/appforvisaonline.aspx

Is it safe to come to Kenya?

Safety is our number one priority, however all international travel has risks that you should be aware of. For US State Department information on Kenya see: https://travel.state.gov/content/travel/en/international-travel.html

What will I be eating?

We will be eating all of our meals as a group. We will get to try traditional Kenyan food, but there will also be some Western options. Most of our meals will be family-style and vegetarian.  We will do our best to accommodate other dietary restrictions. There will be an opportunity for you to inform us of these on a pre-departure health form.

What if I am new to yoga?

This trip welcomes and is open to all levels and styles of yoga practitioners. We will generally practice once a day as a group or with an AYP class.

What should I bring?

We will send you a packing list well prior to departure.

What will the weather be like?

Nairobi sits at 5,450 feet in elevation. It will be the end of dry season, so rain should be infrequent, but it is best to come prepared. The average temperatures in July range from nighttime lows in the 50s to daytime highs in the 70s and low 80s. It will be hotter, dryer and it is usually sunny in Amboseli but it can also get cool at night. So come prepared for the hot sun during the day and layers to keep warm at night.

What time is it in Nairobi?

Nairobi is 7-8 hours ahead of EST in the United States, depending on daylight savings time.

Will I be able to call home and check my email?

We ask you to be fully present on the trip. We will try and find time for you to access email briefly once or twice during the trip while we are in Nairobi if you wish. We ask you not to bring your laptop or other electronics, as you will not have access to electricity in Amboseli. We ask that if you choose to bring a cell phone that you use it discreetly.

What if I want to travel in East Africa before or after the program?

This is a beautiful part of the world to explore. Kilimanjaro and Zanzibar in Tanzania, the Kenyan coast, Mt. Kenya and the Masai Mara are all "nearby". If you would like assistance booking travel and making additional travel arrangements contact Power Travel Int’l LLC.

Will I be able to communicate with Kenyans?

Yes. There are two official languages of Kenya, Swahili and English. Our experience with volunteers is that once they meet and interact with the community, they quickly pick up some Swahili, learn about customs, and engage in the culture in general.
