8:00 – 9:00am Registration (coffee and light refreshments)

9:00 – 10:00am INTRODUCTION TO SAN DIEGO BIOTECH (Speaker: Mary Canady, Ph.D.)

This session will enrich your understanding of the biotech industry, from its operations and management to its mission and community involvement. You will learn about skills that are important to your success in a corporate environment and hear from scientists who apply those skills in their daily work. Discussion will include an understanding of company organization, structure and product-driven goals; the fluctuations of mergers, acquisitions, downsizing, and layoffs; skills needed to succeed; as well as opportunities for professional development.

10:15 – 12:15pm HOW TO EFFECTIVELY MARKET YOURSELF

These concurrent sessions will focus on transferable skills as well as how to identify jobs, how to market yourself, and how to match your strengths to particular jobs. Choose ONE workshop from each session

NTERVIEW SKILLS: PUT YOUR BEST FOOT FORWARD

- Learn how to present yourself best to companies and hiring managers. Learn how to navigate the application process and HR. Learn how to address tough interview questions.

JOB SEARCH IN ANY ECONOMY (Presenter: Judith Finlay, Ph.D.) in Learning Center B

- Learn about online resources and proven techniques to find jobs.

11:15 – 12:15 Session Two

EVERAGE YOUR TRANSFERABLE SKILLS
(Presenter: Markell Steele, M.Ed.) in Learning Center A

- Learn to identify your strengths and weaknesses and how to leverage the skills you have to get the job you want.

RESUME WRITING: MATCH YOUR SKILLS TO THE JOB (Presenter: Barbara Preston, Ph.D.) in Learning Center B

- Learn to craft personalized resumes that capture your strengths.

12:15 – 1:00pm Lunch

1:00 – 2:00pm CAREER EXPLORATION ROUND TABLE

A degree in life science is not restricted to laboratory research. In this session, you have the opportunity to explore what you can do with a MS or PhD degree in life science. Use this opportunity to learn about careers that are new to you and ask the experts about their jobs and how they made their transition away from bench research.
