Form-Based Codes (FBCs) are regulations, not mere guidelines, adopted into city or county law. The ABCs course provides an intensive one-day introduction to the concept of Form-Based Coding. It leads participants through the motions of creating a Form-Based Code.

Instructors will cover the following topics during the day:

- History of urban form, zoning reform, Form-Based Codes, and relevance to sustainability

- Form-Based Code principles and components: a tool for shaping community form and character for smarter growth

- Documentation and analysis of existing urban fabric: a field exercise in small groups to observe, document and discuss streets, frontages, building types and placement followed by group drawing and analysis

- Legal aspects of Form-Based Codes

- Most common mistakes to avoid

- Two case studies, using examples of adopted Form-Based Codes to review the components, process, and type of FBC, and the importance of urban design.

9.0 AIA CES and AICP credits are available for this course.

Note: This course is a prerequisite for FBC201 (Preparing a Form-Based Code – Design Considerations), and FBC301 (Completing, Adopting and Administering the Code). FBCI awards a certificate of recognition to participants of all three courses.
