FACILITIES INFORMATION

Muhlenberg College boasts multiple performance venues fully equipped with state-of-the-art stage lighting and sound systems. Each venue encourages and supports the widest possible range of creative solutions for performance and design. From the intimate and flexible studio blackbox to the traditional proscenium of the elegant Dorothy Hess Baker Theatre, to the open ground plan of the Paul C. Empie Theatre, the possibilities are limitless.

Proscenium Theatres

PAUL C. EMPIE THEATRE, DOROTHY AND DEXTER BAKER CENTER FOR THE ARTS is a magnificent flexible space with excellent acoustics, a large orchestra pit and sophisticated computerized lighting system. The audience seating allows for 400 patrons and will host the Urban Bush Women Opening Concert, the Adjudicated Concerts and the Gala Concert.

DOROTHY HESS BAKER THEATRE, TREXLER PAVILION FOR THEATRE AND DANCE is an elegant but intimate Broadway-style proscenium stage with 350 audience seats on two levels — the orchestra and the balcony. Fully equipped with state-of-the-art stage sound and lighting systems, orchestra pit and fly system, this space will host the Informal Concerts.

Studio and Classroom Spaces

THE DANCE STUDIO THEATRE: An academic classroom for the extensive schedule of study in all styles of dance, the Dance Studio Theatre has a professionally installed dance floor, theatrical lighting and sound system, mirrors and bars that can be draped for performances, and a riser system to accommodate an audience of 80 people at each performance.

THE STUDIO THEATRE: A 50-square-foot performance space, the Studio Theatre encourages creative approaches and flexible staging for classic and innovative productions. The studio is designed with a flexible system of seating risers to accommodate 100 people.

THE UPPER LEVEL DANCE STUDIO: While not intended for public performances, this studio classroom has all of the professionally designed elements of our Dance Studio Theatre: professional dance floor, mirrors and bars.

THE TAP DANCE STUDIO: This specially designed dance studio is located on the second floor of the Baker Center for the Arts and serves as home to the tap dance instruction offered for academic credit, rehearsals for dance concerts, and classes of the Muhlenberg Community Dance Program.

BROWN DANCE STUDIO: A former campus gymnasium, this expansive studio is a facility for concert rehearsals and informal campus performances. The studio is frequently utilized by Six Meters, the improvisational dance troupe, and for masterclasses with visiting performers and choreographers.

THE PAVILION REHEARSAL HALL: In addition to serving as an acting studio for academic courses, this open full-stage-sized studio adjacent to the Scene Shop in the Trexler Pavilion for Theatre & Dance is used regularly for rehearsing productions bound for the Empie, Baker and Studio theatres throughout the year. The studio is also used extensively by acting and directing students as they prepare projects for their academic classes.
